A switching valve is associated with both the primary slow fuel supply line and the secondary main or step fuel supply line so as to alter the course of the air introduction into the primary slow fuel supply line or into the secondary main or step fuel supply line in accordance with the engine load.

An air-fuel ratio control system is disclosed for use with a carburettor including an air-fuel induction passage provided therein with a throttle valve. The system comprises a control circuit responsive to various engine operating factors for deriving an engine operating condition and providing a pulse signal having a constant period and a pulse width corresponding to the derived engine operating condition, fuel supply means for supplying fuel, a fuel passage connected at its one end to the fuel supply means and at the other end to the induction passage downstream of the throttle valve, and a control valve provided in the fuel passage, the control valve responsive to the pulse signal from the control circuit for controlling the flow of fluid passing therethrough thereby providing an optimum air-fuel ratio corresponding to the engine operating condition.

A fast idle device for a carburetor is disclosed such that an optimum throttle valve opening (idle opening) is calculated through a calculating circuit based on various engine operating conditions, after the engine is started, and is controlled repeatedly, until the engine is fully warmed up, in such a way that the throttle valve movement urged by a return spring in the direction to close the valve is released steppedly by a ratchet mechanism. The fast idle device of the present invention comprises various sensors, a calculating circuit, and an electromagnetic ratchet mechanism, in addition to a conventional throttle valve.

A fuel injector of the invention comprises a plurality of parallel, threadlike tubes for admitting electrostatically charged fuel and an accelerator electrode biased at the opposite potential to that applied to a fuel charging electrode. The fuel admitted through the parallel tubes is atomized at the outlet port of the tubes as a result of electrostatic repulsion between charged particles, and attracted and accelerated by an electrode spaced from the outlet port of the tubes. A control electrode may be provided spaced from the accelerator electrode adjacent to the outlet port of the tubes and biased at a potential with respect to the accelerator electrode much lower than the potential applied across the accelerator and fuel-charging electrodes. By varying the potential at the control electrode, the fuel quantity delivered can effectively be controlled.

In a spark-ignited internal combustion engine having a plurality of combustion chambers, at least one combustion chamber is intentionally caused to misfire either periodically or continuously to increase the amount of unburned fuel in the exhaust gas when the temperature in the thermal reactor drops excessively during, e.g., idling of the engine. An ignition system for performing the method has a supplementary ignition primary circuit which is normally disconnected from the ignition coil primary, but causes the secondary voltage either to become zero periodically or to lower when connected with the ignition coil primary. Alternatively, the ignition timing is retarded from a normal timing in a portion of the combustion chambers to raise the exhaust gas temperature. An ignition system for the ignition timing retardation has a supplementary circuit which prevents certain times of the breaks in the primary circuit from producing sparks in the intended combustion chambers and supplies a high voltage pulse to each of these combustion chambers with a predetermined time delay from each of the breaks which are made ineffectual.
