    Abstract: A rocker arm is constructed with a fulcrum having at least a partially cylindrical bearing surface and a central passage for receiving therein a pressurized supply or lubricant or oil, the passage being intersected by radial holes or passages connected to the periphery or outer bearing surface of the fulcrum to define a clearance space between the fulcrum and rocker arm surrounding it, for the introduction of a film of oil or lubricant during the non-loading cycle of operation of the cam, a squeeze film effect being provided during the loading operation of the cam by the oil or lubricant being evacuated through a lower or ambient pressure outlet, a thin film remaining to floatingly mount the rocker arm upon the fulcrum, this being accomplished by the introduction of the oil or lubricant under a pressure greater than the forces generated when the cam is in contact on the cam base circle.

    Abstract: An engine valve operating system for an internal combustion engine comprises a rocker arm for transferring valve actuating effect from a driving cam to an engine valve such as an intake or exhaust valve. An elongate lever or fulcrum member is pivoted at its one end section and disposed in fulcrum contact with the side of the rocker arm opposite to the driving cam. Additionally, a hydraulic actuator is provided to control the pivotal location of the lever and therefore has a movable end section which is in contact with the other end section of the lever and movable in accordance with an engine operating condition, thereby greatly improving control response of the lever while rendering unnecessary a large capacity and sized actuator.

    Abstract: A valve mechanism for an engine includes a camshaft, a rocker arm, a synchronization cam that rotates in synchronism with a valve driving cam, and a switch assembly that switches the driving state of an intake valve or an exhaust valve when a cam follower is pressed by the synchronization cam. The synchronization cam presses the cam follower at a time when the intake valve or the exhaust valve is closed. The switch assembly includes a switch unit that switches the driving state when a switch moves, a driver that drives the switch via a transmission, and a positioner including a spring-biased presser that engages with a concave portion of the transmission. The concave portion includes a first concave portion with which the presser engages in a first driving state, and a second concave portion with which the presser engages in a second driving state.

    Abstract: An internal combustion engine cylinder valve actuation system permitting elimination of valve springs. Valve opening and closing is actuated by a valve actuation means such as pressurized liquid or gas, or else mechanical wires or linkage means. The energy created by combustion causes liquid or gas valve actuation means to oscillate or else circulate between corresponding cylinder valves causing synchronized valve opening and closing between those cylinders. Mechanical linkages similarly comprise physical connections between corresponding cylinder valves and effect synchronized valve opening and closing between those cylinders. The above system thereby eliminates valve float and valve spring failure where valve springs are not required and a typical internal combustion engine is easily retrofitted to accommodate this system.

    Abstract: A lash adjuster includes a plunger and a partitioning member inserted into the plunger. The plunger has a bottom wall with a valve hole and a peripheral wall having an oil passage hole. The plunger defines a high-pressure chamber between the bottom wall and a body. The partitioning member has a baffle having first and second plate surfaces. The baffle has an upper end serving as oil passage end. The plunger has an interior divided into two spaces. The passage hole is located at one space side. An oil passage is defined by an inner peripheral wall surface of the plunger and the first plate surface. A low-pressure chamber is defined at the other space side to store hydraulic fluid.     Abstract: A vertical-type air-cooled OHV engine includes a valve operating system and has a shroud guiding cooling air, which is generated by a cooling fan driven by a crankshaft such that the cooling air flows in an up-down direction with respect to a cylinder head. Intake and exhaust valves are arranged respectively on opposite sides of a vertical plane that is parallel to an axis of the crankshaft and that includes an axis of a cylinder bore. Accordingly, it is possible to provide a vertical-type air-cooled OHV engine capable of evenly cooling both of intake and exhaust valves without changing a route of cooling air.
