After producing a primary honeycomb body having through channels between partition walls, an outer peripheral wall of the primary honeycomb body and an outer peripheral portion of the body including part of partition walls are removed. Thereafter, a coating material is applied to exposed portions of partition walls whose outer peripheral portion has been removed, and then an outer peripheral wall is newly provided and the outer peripheral wall newly provided only is ground. The honeycomb structure has less variation in surface pressure distribution in canning, so that the honeycomb structure can be prevented from breaking during canning and has excellent thermal shock resistance.
