With change gear transmissions, the control computer is operable to control transmission shift points about the contour. With continuous variable transmissions the control computer is operable to modify the effective gear ratio thereof to maintain engine operation on or about the contour. In either case, fuel efficient operation may be optimized.

This may include a fuel injection control system and/or a controller operative to identify an acceleration condition on the basis of at least one sensed acceleration-related engine operating condition, and to rapidly change the fuel injection mode for at least one fuel injector from the split fuel injection mode to the boot fuel injection mode. The fuel injection control system and/or a controller may also be operable to determine a rail pressure, whether the rail pressure is within a predetermined limit, and on that basis, to modify at least one of a main fuel injection signal timing and an anchor fuel injection signal timing such that a resulting multiple fuel injection has a boot injection shape.

A fuel injection control apparatus which infers fuel temperature from cooling water temperature and intake air temperature. From these inferred temperatures, a correction coefficient of the air-fuel ratio is found from the inferred fuel temperature and the intake manifold pressure by using data stored in a map. The map is set up so that a characteristic thereof shows that, the higher the inferred temperature of fuel, the larger the correction coefficient of the air-fuel ratio and, thus, the longer the fuel injection time. Subsequently, an ineffective injection time TV is corrected in accordance with the inferred fuel temperature. A fuel injection time TI is then computed from a basic injection time TP, a representative correction coefficient Ftotal representing all correction coefficients including the correction coefficient of the air-fuel ratio, and the ineffective injection time TV.

Each neural network funtion is defined by a unitary data structure which defines the network architecture, including the number of node layers, the number of nodes per layer, and the interconnections between nodes. The network definition data structures are created by a network training system which utilizes an external training processor which employs gradient methods to derive network weight values in accordance with a cost function which quantitatively defines system objectives and an identification network which is pretrained to provide gradient signals representative the behavior of the physical plant. The training processor executes training cycles asynchronously with the operation of the EEC module in a representative test vehicle.
