    摘要: Methods and apparatus for storing, accessing, generating and using information about speed limits and speed traps are described. The system includes a positional sensor such as a GPS device. Position information is used to access a database of speed limit and/or speed trap information. The database may be local or remote. Access to a remote database may be achieved using a wireless communications device such as a wireless (cellular) modem. Encountered speed traps are logged in response to the activation of a speed trap alert button by a user of the device or the output of a radar/laser detector. Speed trap position, date and time information is transmitted to the remote database system. Speed limit information is used to control the speed of the automobile as part of a cruise control operation and/or is used to provide the motor vehicle operator with warnings, e.g., that the applicable speed limit is being exceeded. Speed trap information which is retrieved using positional information provided by the GPS device is used to warn the user of the device of speed traps in the user's vicinity as the user approaches the location of the known speed trap.

    摘要: A system and method for controlling overtaking by a vehicle equipped with a distance/speed control device traveling a multi-lane roadway of one or more vehicles traveling ahead. The controlled vehicle tracks a vehicle ahead, ascertains the lane in which the vehicle ahead is traveling and, on the basis of the lane and speed and/or distance of the vehicle ahead relative to the controlled vehicle, the speed of the controlled vehicle is adjusted to permit overtaking in the passing lane if the vehicle ahead is traveling in a non-passing lane, and overtaking in a non-passing lane is not permitted if the vehicle ahead is traveling in a passing lane. If a line of vehicles traveling ahead is recognized, overtaking in the non-passing lane is permitted, depending on location-specific traffic rules, the speed of the controlled vehicle being adjusted as appropriate to overtake the line of vehicles.

In accordance with one embodiment, a method of modifying the configuration of a vehicle based on the vehicle's location is provided. The method includes receiving, from a remote Satellite Positioning System (“SPS”) device, positioning data that identifies the location of the vehicle. Then, the positioning data is used to identify one or more regulations that are applicable, given the location of the vehicle. Based on collected vehicle readings, a determination is made regarding whether the configuration of the vehicle should be modified. In turn, the method may cause the configuration of the vehicle to be modified to comply with the one or more regulations.
