摘要: A rechargeable energy storage system (RES S) including a thermal runaway propagation (TRP) mitigation system includes a housing having at least one outlet, a plurality of energy storage cells arranged in the housing, and at least one duct extending along the plurality of energy storage cells. The at least one duct is fluidically connected to the at least one outlet. A gas delivery system including a gas generation system is operable to deliver an amount of inert gas into the housing to purge gases from one or more of the plurality of energy storage cells through the at least one outlet.

摘要: Methods and systems are provided for a battery system which comprises a plurality of battery cells housed inside a battery enclosure of a battery pack, a venting system, and a suppressing agent. The venting system comprises a dual-staged venting valve that equalizes pressure during normal operation of the battery system and a vent valve that opens to relieve pressure during a high pressure or temperature event. The suppressing agent is released into the enclosure of the battery pack to reduce further reactions by removing or limiting oxidants within the battery pack. A solenoid is coupled to the dual-staged venting valve and seals the dual-staged venting valve following release of the suppressing agent, allowing for the suppressing agent to remain in the enclosure for a longer period of time in order to provide increased mitigation of future thermal events in the battery enclosure.

摘要: A traction battery for a motor vehicle includes a plurality of battery cells which are electrically connected to one another, a battery housing which houses the battery cells, several degassing elements for conducting gas away out of the battery housing in the case of a cell outgassing, a sensing system for localizing the cell outgassing, and a control unit which, in the case of a cell outgassing, actuates the degassing elements such that the degassing element situated nearest the cell outgassing remains closed and one or more of the degassing elements that are farther away from the cell outgassing is/are opened.

摘要: A multi-cell rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) includes a plurality of battery cells organized into battery modules and a first enclosure configured to house the battery modules. The RESS also includes a first vent arranged on the first enclosure and configured to direct air from inside the first enclosure to an environment external to the first enclosure. The RESS additionally includes a second vent arranged on the first enclosure and configured to direct air into the first enclosure from the environment external to the first enclosure. The RESS further includes a phase-change material (PCM) device arranged on the second vent and configured to melt in response to at least one of the battery modules experiencing a thermal runaway event. In combination with the first vent, the PCM generates crossflow ventilation through the first enclosure to cool the battery modules therein and mitigate thermal runaway.

摘要: Presented are thermal management systems with passive quenching sacks for cooling battery assemblies, methods for making/using such systems, and vehicles equipped with such systems. A passive thermal management (PTM) system is presented for cooling a battery assembly, such as a traction battery pack with a battery case containing stacked battery cells. The PTM system includes a fluid container that mounts inside the battery assembly, interposed between the battery case and battery cells. The fluid container stows therein a dielectric coolant fluid and has multiple fluid ports that fluidly connect to the battery cells to dispense thereto the coolant fluid. Thermomechanical plugs, such as wax, film, or smart-material barriers, seal the fluid container ports and passively open (e.g., melt, bend, disintegrate, expand, etc.) at a predefined temperature to thereby unseal the fluid ports such that the coolant fluid is fed from the fluid container into the battery cells.

摘要: Embodiments of the present application provide a box of a battery. The box includes: an electrical chamber configured to accommodate a plurality of battery cells, a battery cell including a pressure relief mechanism, and the pressure relief mechanism being configured to be actuated when an internal pressure or temperature of the battery cell reaches a threshold, to relieve the internal pressure; a thermal management component configured to accommodate a fluid to adjust the temperature of the battery cell; and a collection chamber configured to collect emissions discharged from the battery cell when the pressure relief mechanism is actuated, where the electrical chamber and the collection chamber are disposed on both sides of the thermal management component, a wall of the collection chamber is provided with a first pressure relief zone, and the first pressure relief zone is configured to relieve the emissions in the collection chamber.

The traction battery has a device for degassing the traction battery in the case of a thermal event. A duct for carrying gas during degassing of the traction battery is formed in the electric vehicle between at least one of the longitudinal sills and the traction battery. An electric vehicle of this kind ensures increased occupant protection and increased component protection.

摘要: A battery pack includes battery cells arranged a distance above a battery tray such that an exhaust passage is defined between the battery cells and the battery tray. Each respective one of the battery cells includes a casing defining a cell cavity therein and having an end surface disposed proximate the battery tray, an anode and a cathode disposed within the cell cavity, and a sacrificial vent cap. The sacrificial vent cap is constructed at least partially of a polymeric material and connected to the end surface of the casing. The sacrificial vent cap is configured to melt or fracture at a predetermined temperature or pressure, respectively, to thereby connect the cell cavity to the exhaust passage.
