An approach to enhance quality of experience (QoE) in a wireless multimedia communication system is disclosed. A signaling mechanism is provided to make application-layer parameters of a multimedia application to be accessible in one or more network interfaces including an air interface, an access network interface, and a core network interface. Also, the application-layer parameters may be included in quality of service (QoS) class definitions to make the application-layer parameters accessible at the one or more network interfaces. The signaling mechanism and inclusion of application-layer parameters into the QoS class definitions is to enable the QoE-aware link adaptation, resource allocation, joint source channel coding based cross-layer optimizations.

Embodiments of techniques and systems for quality of experience (QoE) reporting in wireless systems are described. In some embodiments, user equipment may receive a first value of a first quality of experience (QoE) metric computed during playout of a multimedia asset at the user equipment. The first value may be received at a first layer in a protocol stack of the user equipment from a second layer above the first layer in the protocol stack. The user equipment may provide a first layer report, including data representative of the first value, for wireless transmission from the user equipment to an eNB. One method can include a QoE-aware system in a node of a radio access network (RAN) receiving a QoE report with at least one QoE metric from a wireless device. The QoE-aware system can modify a layer function in the function layer to improve the QoE metric.

A proxy terminal may include an MBMS access client configured to receive and cache an MBMS transmission including media data and metadata. The proxy terminal may further include a hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) server module configured to transmit at least a portion of the media data to a user equipment (UE) of the wireless communication network via an HTTP transmission. The media data and metadata may be in a dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) format. The proxy terminal may be included in an evolved Node B (eNB), the UE, or another UE of the wireless communication network.

In some embodiments, for example, an apparatus includes a processor circuit, a communication component operative by the processor circuit to receive a data transmission containing a description segment and a correspondence segment, a correspondence processing component operative by the processor circuit to determine a plurality of multicast content streams representing different versions of a media content based on the correspondence segment, and a selection component operative by the processor circuit to select and receive one or more of the plurality of multicast content streams based on characteristics identified in the description segment.
