A flame-retardant resin composition for insulated wires, shielded wires and insulating tubes which are used in the field requiring high-frequency current transmission, for example, in the field of high-density wiring of internal circuits in electronic appliances. The composition comprises (a) a thermoplastic polyolefinic resin having a density of smaller than 0.89 g/cm3, which is prepared by copolymerizing ethylene and a non-polar &agr;-olefin in the presence of a single-site metallocene catalyst, (b) a halogen-containing flame retardant, and (c) zinc oxide. After crosslinking, the composition is used in forming an insulating coating for insulated wires and shielded wires, and in forming insulating tubes.

(1) A flame retardant resin composition comprising 100 parts by weight of thermoplastic resin, 100 to 250 parts by weight of metal hydroxide, and either 5 to 50 parts by weight of acetate or 5 to 80 parts by weight of calcium carbonate. (2) An insulated wire provided with an insulating layer made of the flame retardant resin composition. (3) A thin-wall high-strength insulated wire obtained by having a conductor with an outer diameter 1.0 mm or less covered with the flame retardant resin composition with a thickness from 0.1 mm to 1.0 mm. (4) An insulating tube and a heat-shrinkable tube obtained by molding the flame retardant resin composition into a tubular form. (5) A flat cable obtained by enclosing a plurality of conductors arranged in parallel in an insulating layer and the flat cable obtained by further laminating at least one face of the insulating layer with a film made of polymeric material. (6) A high-voltage DC electric wire provided with an insulating layer made of the flame retardant resin composition. (7) Articles as mentioned above having the flame retardant resin composition cross-linked, especially irradiated with ionizing radiation. Insulated wire, tube, heat-shrinkable tube and flat cable having excellent mechanical strength and flame retardance without generating any harmful gas, when burning, are provided. The insulated wire and the flat cable are suitably used for inner wiring of consumer's electronic devices, automobiles and ships and so on.

The present invention relates to an electric wire having a conductor and a covering layer covering the conductor. The electric wire is inserted under pressure between two contact portions of a terminal of an insulation displacement connector to electrically connect to the terminal. In the present invention, the covering layer is made of a covering material obtained by irradiating with ionizing radiation a resin composition containing an ethylene copolymer and a metal hydroxide surface-treated with a predetermined silane compound. The 100% tensile modulus of the covering material is 7.8 MPa or more. The 100% tensile modulus and elongation satisfy E1>270−8.5×10−6×Y (where E1 is the elongation and Y is the 100% tensile modulus). In this case, removal of the electric wire once mounted in the insulation displacement connector can be prevented, and exposure of the conductor in the electric wire in inserting the electric wire under pressure between two contact portions of the terminal of the insulation displacement connector can be sufficiently prevented.

An electrically insulated cable having a sheath made of a material which is heat-fusible to a polyamide or polyester resin so that a highly waterproof joint portion can be formed between the cable and a housing simultaneously when the housing is injection-molded from a polyamide or polyester resin. The sheath is made from a crosslinked resin composition comprising a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer and a thermoplastic polyester elastomer mixed together in a weight ratio of 80:20 to 20:80. A housing is provided around one end of the sheath of this cable by injection-molding polyamide or polyester engineering plastics to fuse the sheath to the housing, thereby hermetically sealing the interface between the cable and the housing. The sheath may be made from a crosslinked resin composition comprising a thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer and a thermoplastic polyamide elastomer mixed together in a weight of 80:20 to 10:90. It is possible to seal the cable to a housing made of polyamide engineering plastics.

Disclosed is a heat-resistant, high-voltage insulated lead wire for direct current, which meets the demand for higher heat resistance, and its insulating coating over the conductor is formed by a polyolefin resin composition. The polyolefin resin composition is a flame-retarded resin composition comprising of a mixture of a polyethylene whose crystalline component has melting point higher than 125.degree. C. and a copolymer of ethylene and .alpha.-olefin, which contains a multifunctionalized monomer having unsaturated carbon-carbon bond moiety in the molecule as an indispensable component. The insulating coating made of this resin composition is irradiated by an ionizing radiation to give a heat-resistant, high-voltage lead wire for direct current, which has a perpendicular flame resistance (VW-1) acceptable in the UL Standards and has a temperature rating of higher than 125.degree. C.
