The yaw rate may be estimated or measured. The advantage of the invention is that the stability of a vehicle combination can be improved, which in turn improves the road safety.

A system averts catastrophic folding of an articulated vehicle e.g. jack-knifing a tractor against its attached trailer when tires have lost adhesion to a road surface. The apparatus includes independent port and starboard AC motor controllers that convert DC power to AC phases and magnitudes. A battery is regeneratively charged during normal braking operation of the vehicle and discharged when the AC motors apply torque to wheels. Sensors determine when the AC motor controllers provide phases and magnitudes that result in a positive torque to one or more motors and a negative torque to a different one or more motors. The apparatus operates by generating a horizontal yaw force on the trailer in opposition to closing the angle between the tractor and the trailer; by applying a rotational force on the fifth wheel; and by unbalanced torque applied to the tractor's port and starboard driven wheels.

A method for operating a driver assistance system of a vehicle combination is provided. The vehicle combination includes a tractor vehicle and at least one trailer, and the driver assistance system is designed to automatically actuate at least one element of the vehicle combination. The method comprises the following: At least a first parameter characterizing a potentially unstable driving condition of the trailer is detected. A determination is made as to whether an unstable driving condition of the trailer is imminent. If it is determined that an unstable driving condition of the trailer is imminent, a calculation is made of a position of the trailer and the at least one element is automatically actuated at a point in time when the trailer is positioned in the longitudinal direction of the tractor vehicle and directly in line behind the tractor vehicle.

A method is provided for determining a maximum speed limit for a reversing vehicle combination that includes a towing vehicle and at least one towed trailer. The method includes determining a manoeuvre that is to be performed by the vehicle combination, simulating the complete manoeuvre in advance by using a control algorithm and a state space model, thereby obtaining the steering behaviour of the vehicle combination during the manoeuvre, and calculating the maximum speed limit for the vehicle combination during the manoeuvre by using at least one predefined limiting condition. A maximum speed limit for a reverse assistance function can be estimated in advance, which allows for a faster and more efficient reversing of the vehicle combination, and at the same time allows for an improved comfort for the driver.

A brake controller is disclosed for a towed vehicle braking system. The controller is adapted to be mounted in a towing or a towed vehicle having a longitudinal axis for generating a braking control signal to the towed vehicle braking system. The controller comprises an inertial sensor including plural sensor axes adapted to be mounted in an undefined orientation relative to the longitudinal axis for generating sensor data associated with each sensor axis. The controller also comprises a memory device for storing the sensor data associated with each sensor axis and a processor for processing the sensor data with the braking control signal to evaluate orientation of the inertial sensor relative to the longitudinal axis. In particular the brake controller is adapted to control activation of the towed vehicle braking system in a manner that is relatively insensitive to acceleration of the vehicle in a lateral direction and to orientation of the inertial sensor without prescribing a mounting orientation of the brake controller relative to the towing or towed vehicle. A method of operating a brake controller for a towed vehicle braking system is also disclosed.

When a trailer is pulled by a tow vehicle where the trailer begins to sway to the left and right of the tow vehicle a large sway can result in loss of control of the trailer and or tow vehicle. The field of the present invention is a system and method of controlling a trailer sway which comprises determining the sway of the trailer utilizing an electronic sensor and independently applying the left or right trailer brakes at varying levels to reduce trailer sway. The traditional single braking signal power from the tow vehicle is separated into two independent braking signals for each of the left and right brakes. All brakes are applied whenever the traditional braking signal goes active where trailer battery power is utilized to independently activate the left and or right brakes during trailer sway.
