Abstract:
A screw device for fixing insulating panels together is made in one piece from synthetic material and includes a head and a shank. The head has a flat surface for abutment on one of the insulating panels, a surface opposite the abutment surface having at least one drive wing, which extends to a distance greater than 10 mm from the opposite surface. The shank includes an elongate body extending from the head and substantially perpendicular to the abutment surface. The screw has a point arranged at an end of the body opposite the head, and at least one helical thread, which extends at least over part of at least one of the point and body, and is spaced from the head. The helical thread has a diameter that increases towards the head, a portion having a frustum-shaped envelope, and a pitch greater than 8 mm.
Abstract:
A plant growth system is provided in which an irrigation device provides water and/or nutrients to a plant growth substrate. The plant growth substrate comprises an MMVF slab and a single MMVF block on a first surface of the MMVF slab. The MMVF slab comprises a drain hole which is disposed at one end of the surface, and the irrigation device provides water and/or nutrients to the substrate at a position more than 50% of the length of the slab away from the drain hole. This improves the control of water an nutrients in the slab as a whole.
Abstract:
A melt for use in the production of man-made vitreous fibres may be formed in a circulating combustion chamber (20) by melting particulate material. The material is collected in a base region of the combustion chamber (26), where it can be heated using submerged combustion apparatus (40). The submerged combustion process is controlled to ensure that the proportion of Fe(2+) based on total Fe within the melt extracted from an outlet of the chamber is greater than 80%.
Abstract:
A man-made vitreous fibre (MMVF) plant growth substrate is provided. The substrate has properties including a volume of 3 to 20 litres, two layers of differing density, and the use of an organic binder selected from formaldehyde free binders. This is found to provide a substrate which allows excellent control of the water and/or nutrient contents within the substrate when used for plant growth.

A man-made vitreous fibre (MMVF) plant growth substrate is provided. The substrate has properties including a volume of 3 to 20 litres, two layers of differing density. The height of the two layers lie in the ranges of 25 mm to 50 mm and 50 mm to 100 mm This is found to provide a substrate which allows excellent control of the water and/or nutrient contents within the substrate when used for plant growth.
Abstract:
A man-made vitreous fibre (MMVF) plant growth substrate is provided together with an irrigation strategy for providing water to the substrate. The substrate comprises a slab having a volume of 3 to 20 litres on which a single block containing one or more plants is disposed. In the context of this substrate, it is found that an irrigation strategy can be used which comprises a first period during which the desired water content in the slab is reduced to a minimum level before increasing and a second period during which the desired water content is maintained at a substantially constant level, wherein the difference between the minimum level and the constant level expressed as a percentage of the water content required to saturate the plant growth substrate is less than or equal to 25%. This provides excellent control over the balance between vegetative and generative growth in the plant.
Abstract:
The invention provides sound insulating panels for use in noise screens, the panels being formed from mineral wool of substantially uniform density and average density from about 100 to about 2000 kg/m3 and thickness not more than about 200 mm. These panels may advantageously be used in noise screens comprising one or two upright support members having I-profile cross-section of width greater than the panel thickness.
