    摘要: A torch ignition type internal combustion engine with no intake valve in the auxiliary combustion chamber, the engine comprising: a cylinder; a cylinder head; a reciprocating piston received snugly in the cylinder; a main combustion chamber defined between said cylinder head and an end face of the reciprocating piston and having intake and exhaust valves to control intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder head; an auxiliary combustion chamber provided in the head of the cylinder; a passage interconnecting said main and auxiliary combustion chambers; and an ignition plug having sparking electrodes located in said passage; the auxiliary combustion chamber having a volume of a ratio within the range of 0.0106:1 to 0.0137:1 with respect to the volume of displacement of the piston, the passage having a cross-sectional area of a ratio within the range of 0.009:1 to 0.023:1 with respect to the cross-sectional area of the end face of the piston and the engine having a compression ratio within the range of 8.0 to 9.5.

    摘要: A method (and structure) of generating a two step variable length delay, including passing an input clock signal through a plurality of serially-interconnected delay elements, each delay element having a delay time interval dtc, thereby generating a corresponding plurality delayed signals. A set of m (where m is an integer greater than 2) of the plurality of delayed signals is switably selected. The selected m delayed signals form a first to an mth coarse adjustment delay signals. An nth coarse adjustment delay signal leads an (n+1)th coarse adjustment delay signal in phase by a time interval dtc (n is an integer being 1 or more and (m−1) or less). From the first to mth coarse adjustment delay signals, 2m fine adjustment delay signals are generated, where a jth fine adjustment delay signal leads a (j+1)th fine adjustment delay signal in a phase by a time interval dtc′, where time interval dtc′ is finer than the time interval dtc. The generation is achieved by amplifying the first to mth coarse adjustment delay signals, by mixing, for each n, waveforms of the nth and the (n+1)th coarse adjustment delay signals, and mixing waveforms of the mth and the first coarse adjustment delay signals. One of the 2m fine adjustment delay signals is outputted to be a selected variable length delay output signal.

    摘要: Start catalysts (SCs) having an O2 storage function are disposed in an exhaust gas passage of an internal combustion engine, and an NOx occluding and reducing catalyst is disposed in the exhaust gas passages downstream of the SCs. NOx in the exhaust gas is absorbed by the NOx occluding and reducing catalyst when the engine is in operation at a lean air-fuel ratio. When NOx is to be released, the engine is operated at a rich air-fuel ratio so that exhaust gas having a rich air-fuel ratio flows into the SCs and into the NOx occluding and reducing catalyst. An electronic control unit (ECU) executes the secondary fuel injection that does not contribute to the combustion in the expansion stroke or in the exhaust stroke of each cylinder by using a direct cylinder fuel injection valve at the time when the engine operating air-fuel ratio is to be changed from a lean air-fuel ratio operation to a rich air-fuel ratio, so that exhaust gas having a rich air-fuel ratio flows into the SC and that oxygen stored in the SC is released. At the time of changing over the air-fuel ratio, therefore, the air-fuel ratio is changed from the lean side to the rich side without delay, eliminating such an occurrence that NOx is released from the NOx occluding and reducing catalyst without being purified at the time of changing the air-fuel ratio.

    摘要: An NOx occluding and reducing catalyst is disposed in an exhaust gas passage of an internal combustion engine that operates at a lean air-fuel ratio. When the engine is operating at a lean air-fuel ratio, the NOx occluding and reducing catalyst absorbs NOx in the exhaust gas. To release NOx, the engine is operated at a rich air-fuel ratio so that the exhaust gas flowing into the NOx occluding and reducing catalyst acquires a rich air-fuel ratio. While the engine is operated in a region of moderate lean air-fuel ratios of from the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio to an air-fuel ratio of about 20 at the time when the engine operating air-fuel ratio is changing from a lean air-fuel ratio operation to a rich air-fuel ratio operation, an electronic control unit (ECU) of the engine injects secondary fuel, that does not contribute to combustion, into the cylinders of the engine through the direct cylinder fuel injection valves in the expansion stroke or the exhaust stroke of the cylinders, so that the exhaust gas flowing into the NOx occluding and reducing catalyst acquires a rich air-fuel ratio. This prevents unpurified NOx from flowing out of the NOx occluding and reducing catalyst at the time when the engine operating air-fuel ratio is changed.
