Abstract: A process for producing mineral wool having a chemical composition comprised of between about 50 and 70 weight percent silica plus alumina, about 20 and 35 weight percent lime plug magnesia and about 5 and 15 weight percent iron oxides is described. The process includes feeding a first particulate waste material having a particle size of 100 weight percent -200 mesh and containing organic combustibles having heating values of about 10 mega J per kilogram of slag and inorganic non-combustibles, a second particulate waste material having a particle size of 100 weight percent -200 mesh and containing fluxstone, and preheated air at a velocity of between about 30 meters to 60 meters per second at a temperature of about 500.degree. C. into a high temperature cyclone-like furnace. The combustibles are substantially instantaneously burned and the non-combustibles and the fluxstone are melted and reacted to form a molten slag which can be fiberized into mineral wool.

Abstract: Method of producing a melt from rock materials in a cupola furnace which materials are charged as uniformly-shaped briquettes together with coke. In order to recue the content of CO in the exhaust and to increase the melting capacity of the furnace, the flow of combustion air related to the cross-section of the furnace is at least 60 Nm.sup.3 /m.sup.2 minute, and the briquettes having such a shape that a porosity in the combustion zone is more than 0.45.

Abstract: In a method for melting a material in a vertical shaft furnace having an upper portion, a lower combustion zone portion and an intermediate post-burning portion, said upper and lower portions being separated by a restriction and wherein coke is burned and the material melted in said lower combustion zone by introducing a blast of air close to the bottom of the lower combustion zone to produce combustion gases containing CO and/or H.sub.2 S, the improvement which comprises providing a slurry covered coke to said lower combustion zone for combustion and directing the combustion gases resulting from the combustion of said slurry covered coke to said intermediate post-burning portion and post-burning said combustion gases by introducing into said combustion gases a second blast of air at a level above the point of introduction of said first blast of air at which formation of CO normally has ceased and where the temperature of the mixture of combustion gases and air is sufficiently high so that said mixture is self-igniting. Preferably the post-burning portion is effected in a chamber outside the shaft furnace and a portion of the resulting combustion gases is reintroduced into the upper portion.

Abstract: A system for disposing of garbage and gaining useful heat output from controlled burning of the garbage is provided and is particularly adapted for decentralized locations in a community. The garbage is dumped into a feed hopper and piled to a substantial depth with the forward face of substantial crosssectional area being acted upon by rotating shredders; the garbage being continuously fed forward by the endless belt support at the bottom of the hopper. A second series of shredders serves to completely shred and masticate the garbage into fine particles and project the same into a combined compressing and pulverizing station. Continuous ignition is provided by a heatretaining wall immediately downstream. Solid particles, glass and metal are removed by transverse conveyors at critical locations along the system. Computer control of the operating components and auxiliary fuel injection maintains full efficiency in the incinerator chamber. Heat exchange means is provided for useful heat output with expansion and scrubber chambers immediately downstream thereof. Steam is injected to move the relaxed gaseous products and to precipitate out minute solid products; the gaseous products being forced to the bottom of the unit to assist the precipitation and to thus minimize air pollution. A melting cupola for glass or other thermoplastic material receives heat from the incinerator chamber with continuous casting of such byproducts and cutting into blocks.
