A method for preparing stretchable bonded nonwoven fabrics which involves forming a substantially nonbonded nonwoven web of multiple-component continuous filaments or staple fibers which are capable of developing three-dimensional spiral crimp, activating the spiral crimp by heating substantially nonbonded web under free shrinkage conditions during which the nonwoven remains substantially nonbonded, followed by bonding the crimped nonwoven web using an array of discrete mechanical, chemical, or thermal bonds. Nonwoven fabrics prepared according to the method of the current invention have an improved combination of stretch-recovery properties, textile hand and drape compared to multiple-component nonwoven fabrics known in the art.

A three-dimensionally structured fiber fabric has a high fluid absorption capacity of at least 5 g fluid per g of fiber fabric and elevations and depressions that occur alternately and regularly with reference to the fabric plane, which includes at least one nonwoven fabric layer and a shrunk fabric bonded to it. The bond between the nonwoven fabric layer and the shrunk fabric has been produced by hot bonding, and the hot bonding occurred at least perpendicular to the direction of the greatest shrinkage of the shrunk fabric, in the form of regularly arranged lines. Furthermore, spaces have formed between the nonwoven fabric layer and the shrunk fabric, at the alternately occurring elevations and depressions, which spaces promote the fluid absorption capacity of the fabric. These fabrics may be used as wiping cloths, wet wipes, as fluid dispensers for cleaning or for applying fluids, etc.

Non-woven fiber fabrics are described, suitable for use in self-supporting dust filter units having at least one passage (10) defined by wall portions (12) made from air permeable fiber fabric through which wall portions (12) air can pass a d be drawn off along the passage (10) but which prevent the passage therethrough of dust and/or other debris carried by the air. The non-woven fabrics are blends of high temperature resistant fibers. A preferred blend consists of 50% by weight polyimide fibers and 50% by weight aramid fibers, but may include glass fibers, polytetrafuoroethylene fibers, or others and may optionally include an amount of heat activated fibers having a relatively high melting point for example, polyphenylene sulphide fibers.

The present disclosure describes flame-retardant, high-temperature resistant polyimide fibers, nonwovens made from said fibers, as well as the fibers and molded articles obtained after a heat treatment. A composite of such fibers is heated to a temperature in the glass transition range of the fiber, i.e., between 280.degree. and 350.degree. C. This heat treatment develops a contraction force of 0.3 to 1.1 cN in the fibers which results in a fiber shrinkage of between 20 and 60% and the formation of cohesive bonds. The fibers of the invention enable the manufacture of molded articles that are particularly strong, have a high temperature resistance and flame-retardant properties, while having a relatively low density.

Improved ultrafine sheath-core composite fibers and composite sheets composed of these fibers are disclosed. The composite fibers have a fineness in the range of 0.0001 to 0.5 denier and a core/sheath weight ratio in the range of 10/90 to 70/30. The core has a very high intrinsic viscosity within a specific range and is located at the center of the sheath. The sheath is composed of a polyester copolymerized with 1.5 to 8 mole % of 5-sodium (or lithium or potassium) sulfoisophthalate, based on the total acid component, of 5-sodium (or lithium or potassium) sulfoisophthalate and having a thickness of 0.04 to 2 microns. The composite fibers have a high strength and are dyeable with a cationic dye. When the composite fibers are combined with an elastic material such as polyurethane, suede-like artificial leathers having excellent softness, touch, feel and color can be obtained.

A process for the production of chemically bonded non-woven material, such as synthetic leather, is disclosed wherein a fiber fleece is impregnated with a heat sensitized polymer dispersion and the composition is destabilized to form a porous gel structure. Finally, the polymer is crosslinked at below 150.degree. C. and is dehydrated. Additionally, cut fibers of polyester of polyamide are formed into a fleece and an aqueous dispersion of butadiene-styrene coagulant and a curing composition is impregnated through the fleece. The binder is gelled and cured in superheated steam. The products obtained are soft and possess excellent physical and mechanical properties as well as superior dynamic stressability.

The web contracts and is crimped by the stitches in the respective other direction, and is treated to make the crimp permanent so that the finished fabric is expansible in the crimped direction.
