In a wobble signal detecting circuit provided by the present invention, a wobble signal is converted into binary data before being supplied to a PLL circuit by way of a polarity switching circuit and a clock switching circuit. The PLL circuit outputs a recording/playback timing generation clock signal. The frequency of the recording/playback timing generation clock signal is divided by a frequency dividing circuit before being fed back to the PLL circuit. A difference in phase between the wobble signal and the feedback signal is detected by a phase inversion detecting circuit and, if the difference in phase exceeds a phase difference determined in advance, the phase inversion detecting circuit generates a polarity switching signal for switching the polarity of the wobble signal. The polarity switching signal is used to invert the polarity of the polarity switching circuit.

A defect detection apparatus has a simple constitution and performs accurate defect detection while clearly differentiating between defect detection and tracking error detection. The defect detection apparatus includes a photodetector having a light-receiving area for receiving a return light beam from a recording medium irradiated with a light beam. A defect on the recording medium is detected based on an output from the photodetector. The defect detection apparatus according to the present invention comprises signal generation means for generating on the basis of an output from the photodetector at least two phase detection signals having phases which vary in a manner complementary to each other according to a deviation of the light beam from a track of the recording medium, adding means for adding up absolute value of the phase detection signal to generate a sum total signal having a value corresponding to a result of the addition, and discrimination means for comparing the value of the sum total signal with a predetermined reference value so as to generate a defect detection signal based on a result of the comparison.

Optical disks have auxiliary data recording areas, where different IDs for individual disks, and/or cipher keys and/or decoding keys for ciphers are recorded in advance in a factory. By using the IDs to release the soft ciphers, using the cipher keys when sending the ciphers, and using the decoding keys when receiving the ciphers, user authorization procedures are simplified.

One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for skipping a track on a disc in a disc player. Unlike current systems, this system does not rely on identifying tracks to be skipped based upon which slot a disc is located in. Instead, one embodiment of the present invention identifies discs based upon identification data read from discs in the disc player. Thus, one embodiment of the present invention provides an apparatus for playing discs that skips a track on a disc. The apparatus includes a disc player including a sequencing mechanism that generates a sequence of tracks from discs in the disc player. The disc player also includes an identification mechanism within the disc player that reads identification information from discs in the disc player and determines from the identification information if a specific disc is in the disc player. The disc player additionally includes a skipping mechanism within the disc player that skips a specific track if the specific track occurs in the sequence of tracks.
