To prevent cracks in the AGaN-based layer, the AlGaN-based layer is formed before planarization of the surface of the GaN layer on a surface of the GaN layer which is not planar. For a laser, the AlGaN-based layers serve as clad layers which sandwich the light emitting layer.

Separately or together in combination, the various aspects of the invention are directed at improving the production of alkenyl alkanoates and VA in particular, including reduction of by-products and improved production efficiency. A first aspect of the present invention pertains to a unique palladium/gold catalyst or pre-catalyst (optionally calcined) that includes rhodium or another metal. A second aspect pertains to a palladium/gold catalyst or pre-catalyst that is based on a layered support material where one layer of the support material is substantially free of catalytic components. Genes have been isolated from a Methylomonas sp encoding elements of the exopolysaccharide biosynthetic pathway. The genes and gene products are the first isolated from an organisms capable of utilizing single carbon (C1) substrates as energy sources. The genes are useful for engineering other C1 utilizing microorganisms to make altered levels of exopolysaccharide which is used in a variety of commercial applications.
