Abstract: Devices and methods for therapeutic photodynamic modulation of neural function in a human. One embodiment of a method in accordance with the technology includes administering a photosensitizer to a human, wherein the photosensitizer preferentially accumulates at nerves proximate a blood vessel compared to non-neural tissue of the blood vessel. The method can further include irradiating the photosensitizer using a radiation emitter positioned within the human, wherein the radiation has a wavelength that causes the photosensitizer to react and alter at least a portion of the nerves thereby providing a therapeutic reduction in sympathetic neural activity. Several embodiments of the technology are useful for disrupting renal nerves, such as renal denervation, for treating hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, and other indications.

Abstract: Systems and methods for illumination of a vascular space and its contents using an electromagnetic energy source that supplies a plurality of wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet to infrared are shown. Illumination can be performed using multiple wavelengths, simultaneously or sequentially, and can be performed in accordance with a protocol where an initial illumination produces an effect that is at least partially reversed by a subsequent illumination. Illumination protocols can be stored on a database and accessed via a user interface displayed on the electromagnetic energy source. The database can be used to store data related to performance of system components, and such data can be used to override or modify an illumination protocol.

Abstract: A catheter and catheter system can use energy tailored for remodeling and/or removal of target material proximate to a body lumen, often of stenotic material or tissue in the luminal wall of a blood vessel of a patient. An elongate flexible catheter body with a radially expandable structure may have a plurality of electrodes or other electrosurgical energy delivery surfaces to radially engage the luminal wall when the structure expands. Feedback using one or parameters of voltage, current, power, temperature, impedance magnitude, impedance phase angle, and frequency may be used to selectively control the delivery of energy.

Abstract: The present invention is a non-invasive apparatus, system, and method for performing irradiation light therapy upon blood circulating within the nostrils of a living mammalian subject. The merit and medical value of the invention resides in its ability to achieve a reversal of red blood cell aggregation in-vivo without invading the tissues or organs of the living subject—a clinical result which leads to lower blood viscosity and improved blood circulation. In this manner, the invention provides the living mammalian subject with an enhanced immunity from diseases, a reduced vulnerability to hypertension, and a reduced risk of a cardiovascular incident. Furthermore, by altering the wavelengths transmitted by the light generating unit(s) and controlling the light energy dosage, the method and system can also fine-tuned further as intervention for various diseases.

Abstract: This invention provides methods for treating cold extremities using localized electromagnetic radiation directed at excitable tissues, including nerves, muscles and blood vessels. By controlling the wavelength, the wavelength bandpass, pulse duration, intensity, pulse frequency, and/or variations of those characteristics over time, and by selecting sites of exposure to electromagnetic radiation, improvements in the function of different tissues and organs can be provided. Responses can be monitored by measuring physiological variables including temperature and blood flow.
