A vertically-oriented, counter-rotating wind turbine assembly is disclosed. The assembly can include two or more wind turbines, and each adjacent pair of wind turbines is configured to rotate oppositely. The wind turbines are separated by supporting plates, and include a rotor and a stator, respectively. The relative rotation of the rotor and stator generates electricity. The wind turbines are supported above and below by levitation and compression bearings, respectively. A motor can initiate rotation of the wind turbines when the ambient wind is below a break-in speed and above a steady state speed.

One example of our system makes it easier to bring the wind turbines to the residential and densely populated areas. The systems can be cascaded together to supply a bigger population or area. Since most of the system is hidden, it looks better for appearance of the city/houses. It has less of noise problem near houses, and less bird and bat mortality rates, with less radar interferences, less maintenance worker hazard, and less shipping/installation cost. This technology addresses e.g. Energy and Power Management Systems for harvesting wind energy by wind-catcher tower and diffuser augmented wind turbines. For example, we discuss the placement of diffusers at the intake of the wind turbines, inside a wind-catcher tower, to significantly increase the efficiency of the wind energy capture, plus the modular design of the wind-catcher tower. Various designs for the system and components are presented here.

A tribrid electric transportation system including a dual generator wind turbine to produce wind energy, a solar panel mounted to the roof gathers a secondary source of solar energy, and a diesel fueled electric generator or fuel cell adds a third source of energy to an electric motor to propel the vehicle forward. The vehicle may consist of a plurality of vehicle types. A switching and control system allows the battery bank to be recharged when necessary, from any of the three primary sources of energy. The system is designed to have at least two energy sources directly power the electric motor, thereby preserving the battery pack as reserve energy when needed. An emergency backup charging unit may be available if the battery bank cannot be sufficiently recharged by the tribrid solar, wind and diesel generator or fuel cell systems. The invention takes advantage of this backup energy system to run more efficiently, under any condition, for longer distances and to preserve the battery bank for a much longer period of time.

The portable and autonomous desalination system is an autonomous reverse osmosis (RO) desalination system utilizing power from a combination of electricity generation and storage sources that include a photovoltaic (PV) unit, a vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) unit, and an electricity storage unit. Electric power from PV, VAWT or storage units or a combination of these units is provided, depending upon the availability of sunlight or wind, or for night operation for water desalination using the reverse-osmosis process. The unit is portable, environmentally friendly, self-sufficient and self-sustaining in terms of supplying the electricity and fresh drinking water needs of the typical household. Multiple PV-VAWT-RO desalination units are combined together to provide fresh, clean water and electricity for communities of various sizes. A small-size, straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine runs at very low wind speeds for urban operation.
