Optical devices using reflective polarizers and, in particular, diffusely reflective polarizers are provided. Many of the optical devices utilize the diffusely reflecting and specularly transmitting properties of diffusely reflecting polarizers to enhance their optical characteristics. The optical devices include a lighting system which uses a reflector formed from a diffusely reflecting polarizer attached to a specular reflector. Another optical device is a display apparatus which uses a diffusely reflecting polarizer layer in combination with a turning lens which folds shallow angle light toward a light modulating layer. Other optical devices exploit the depolarizing characteristics of a diffusely reflecting polarizer when reflecting light. Still other optical devices use diffusely reflecting polarizers to recycle light and improve display illumination.

The coating contains the gamma-prime (Ni3Al) nickel aluminide intermetallic phase and either the beta (NiAl) nickel aluminide intermetallic phase or the gamma solid solution phase. The coating has an average aluminum content of 14 to 30 atomic percent and an average platinum-group metal content of at least 1 to less than 10 atomic percent, the balance of the coating being nickel, one or more of chromium, silicon, tantalum, and cobalt, optionally one or more of hafnium, yttrium, zirconium, lanthanum, and cerium, and incidental impurities.

A directed vapor deposition (DVD) method and system for applying at least one bond coating on at least one substrate for thermal barrier coating systems. The method and system provides for alloy strengthening in high temperature metallic alloys that can be melt or solid state processed to materials that one applies by vapor deposition. The creep strengthened coating contains nanoscopic particles of oxides, nitrides, borides, carbides, and other materials which are formed by reactive codeposition. An approach for reactive codeposition is plasma assisted directed vapor deposition. Accordingly, the resultant structure may be utilized for, but not limited thereto, high temperature coatings, e.g. for protecting rocket or power turbines, or diesel engine components. The resultant structure is has a greatly extended lifetime attributed in part to the elimination of coating spallation by the “rumpling” mechanism.
