A thin film magnetic head includes an upper magnetic pole maintaining a constant thickness in a range determined by the so-called gap depth. A thinner film portion is defined in the upper magnetic pole in a range rearward of the range determined by the gap depth. The thinner film portion has a reduced thickness smaller than the constant thickness. The upper magnetic pole starts to enlarge the core width in the lateral direction at the rear end of the region determined by the so-called neck height. The neck height smaller than the gap depth serves to establish a reduction in the thickness of the upper magnetic pole after the upper magnetic pole gets larger in the lateral direction. A magnetic saturation can reliably be prevented at the thinner film portion in the upper magnetic pole. The front end of the upper magnetic pole is allowed to receive a larger quantity of a magnetic flux. It is possible to reliably enhance a magnetic field for recordation in the thin film magnetic head.

Individual cells or cell groups of at least two cells from a mixed cell population of different types of cells are placed on a certain two-dimensional, coordinate system. Then a distinction is made among the individual cells or cells in the cell groups, based on the shape or size of the cells or by using a cell marker. Physical energy such as laser light is applied to the positions or regions occupied by non-target cells or cell groups including non-target cells in order to selectively kill the non-target cells or cause dysfunction of the non-target cells.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for detecting nerve stem cells/progenitor cells among a tissue or a mass of cells as constituted of a plurality of cell species, and a method for screening for a drug functioning as a nerve differentiation factor or the like by using the above-mentioned detection method. It was found in this invention that the expression of the NC1 gene was high in undifferentiated nerve stem cells and said expression decreased with an advance of differentiation. Furthermore in this invention, by using the NC1 gene, the product thereof (NC1 protein) and the base sequences or the amino acid sequences thereof, antibodies or the like, it became possible to detect nerve stem cells/progenitor cells by way of various methods, so that a novel method for screening for a drug functioning as a nerve differentiation factor or the like was provided.
