摘要: A method and associated apparatus for embedding control information in a data signal to be transmitted over a data link by a network node includes the generation of control information to be transmitted over a data link by a network node. Additionally, a transmission signal is generated by combining the control information with data to be transmitted. In an embodiment of the present invention, the data is transmitted within a prescribed frequency bandwidth such that a frequency gap is defined within the frequency bandwidth. Control information is, as such, transmitted within the defined frequency gap.

摘要: A module that includes both an “add-in”/“drop-out” pair of ports and a “drop-in”/“add-out” pair of ports comprises an arrangement of elements that combines an optical signal having a chosen wavelength with an optical signal applied at the “add-in” port, and outputs the combined signal at the “add-out port.” Concurrently, the module extracts an optical signal with the same wavelength from an optical signal applied at the “drop-in” port signal, yielding an optical signal at the “drop-out” port that is missing that same wavelength. When the amount of information that needs to be sent from a first network node to a second, remote, node, is greater than that which a single wavelength can handle, a plurality of the above-described modules are interconnected within the first node by optically coupling the “add” ports in a “daisy chain” fashion and the “drop” ports in a “daisy chain” fashion, with each module operating at a different wavelength.

摘要: A reconfigurable ADD/DROP multiplexer/demultiplexer apparatus is implemented by connecting a multiplexer/demultiplexer apparatus to a serializer/deserializer (SERDES) apparatus having a loop-back capability. By selectively activating the loop-back functionality of the SERDES apparatus the combination can be made to function as a reconfigurable ADD/DROP multiplexer/demultiplexer apparatus.

摘要: A method and associated apparatus for embedding control information in a data signal to be transmitted over a data link by a network node. The method comprises generation of control information to be transmitted over a data link by a network node. A signal is generated by combining the control information with the data. In a first embodiment, the data includes individual temporal packets of information such that an interpacket gap is temporally defined between said temporal packets of information. Control information is transmitted within the interpacket gap. In a second embodiment, the data is transmitted within a prescribed frequency bandwidth such that a frequency gap is defined within the frequency bandwidth. Control information is transmitted within the frequency gap. The data handling capacity of the control information is maintained in both the first and the second embodiments.

摘要: A system and method for optimizing an optical RF photonic link system is presented. The system comprises a modulator subsystem in which nonlinear response is compensated by an envelope precompensation method and employs an optical filter to suppress optical carriers and extract modulated sidebands, an optical amplifier, and an array of photodetectors, each having a plurality of pairs of diodes. The modulator subsystem performs optical filtering on the signal, the signal is amplified by the optical amplifier and sent to the array of photodetectors. The optical amplifier can be an erbium doped fiber amplifier, or a phase sensitive amplifier. The optical power can be delivered to each diode of the array of photodetectors via a photonic integrated circuit.

摘要: A high rate radio frequency (RF) link system and method for spatially multiplexing data transmission is presented. The system can comprise a common communications point characterized by a first collection of antennas having independent channels interconnected with a known latency connection to a central process location, such as with optical fiber; and a second similarly configured collective endpoint or set of endpoints wherein multi-path between the first collection and the second collection is negligible. Signal decorrelation between independent channels is achieved through a combination of spatial separation and signal processing. In one aspect, decorrelation is performed using near-maximum likelihood Multiple-Input Multiple-Output signal processing.

摘要: Photocurrent suppression is achieved without deleteriously affecting modulation performance in a surface normal, electro-absorption, quantum well modulator by introducing a sufficient number of non-radiative recombination centers in the quantum well region of the modulator. The presence of the non-radiative recombination centers significantly shortens the lifetime of photogenerated carriers and, thereby, suppresses the photocurrent. Modulation performance characteristics such as contrast ratio are maintained at acceptable levels even though exciton broadening occurs in the quantum wells. The present modulator exhibits a careful balance between defect density in the quantum wells and the acceptable degree of exciton broadening necessary to preserve quantum effects.
