    摘要: A simple, optimized lead-acid battery includes a stack of a plurality of film pouches, each containing positive and negative electrode elements and separators. The pouches are prepared by folding an elongate film strip, and collector tabs are provided for the electrodes at either end of the stack. Electrode pairs intermediate the ends of the stack are electrically connected through adjoining openings in the pouch walls, e.g. be welding. In the most preferred embodiment, an integral vent is formed from flaps cut in the film strip and the pouch edges and top are heat sealed for electrolyte containment.

    摘要: The present invention provides a method for maintaining the specific gravity of acid in a lead-acid battery within a predetermined range to prevent undesirable plate degradation and gassing during storage. Extended shelf-life is accomplished by employing a battery which is formed to the desired voltage and which is stored in a damp condition with the electrolyte maintained in a range which, in the most preferred embodiment, is between about 1.015 and 1.320. A desiccant, for example a gelled sulfuric acid desiccant, is placed in the battery housing, out of contact with the plates, to absorb the water vapor which is generated by the self-discharge reactions. The amount of desiccant is selected so that all the water vapor formed during such reactions is removed to maintain the specific gravity of the electrolyte in said range. Extended shelf-life results, and the desiccant can be used to form the battery electrolyte at the time it is desired to place the battery in service.

    摘要: A thin, bipolar, lead-acid battery includes one or more cells, each of which is provided with a one-way vent for allowing release of gas generated during battery formation or overcharge. A planar spacer, having a cut out central portion, receives the electrode and separator components, and has one or more passageways formed therein extending from the wall of the cut out portion to the exterior of one of its edges. The spacer then resembles a frame for the battery components. Film sheets are applied to the opposed surfaces of the spacer and extend outwardly therefrom, at least in the vicinity of the spacer hole. The film is sealed, e.g. by heat, in all exterior areas except adjacent the hole. An oil, such as a silicone oil, is used between the film sheet in the non sealed area to form a one way "duck bill" type vent valve.
