The invention is directed to an arrangement for controlling a fuel metering apparatus controlled by a microprocessor and supplemented with an emergency control system. In the event of a microprocessor failure due to a defect, the system attempts to restart the microprocessor. At the same time, an emergency operation pulse generator assumes control of the fuel metering apparatus. Such an emergency control system is particularly suited for fuel metering apparatus which serve to control internal combustion engines for motor vehicles.

The invention is directed to a system for setting the throttle flap angle for an internal combustion engine. The system sets the idle stop for the idle throttle flap angle and monitors the setting with respect to defects that occur. If the throttle flap is in contact engagement with the idle stop, a contact is actuated which causes a buffer storage of the actual throttle flap angle which thereby represents the position of the idle stop. If then, for example, the idle stop changes during driving operation, its new position is established upon a renewed contact engagement of the throttle flap, by measuring the throttle flap angle. A possible defect can be established from a comparison of actual and desired values and a positioning motor is then appropriately driven to displace the idle stop. This system has the advantage that a defect occurring in the region of the positioning motor is detected without additional circuit complexity.

A sensor is disclosed for detecting the position of a movable part in a motor vehicle with a common drive for several position pickups and several paths. The individual paths are traversed at least partly consecutively over the total range so that a position signal with different resolution depending on the path can be made available. This is accomplished by means of individual paths corresponding to different places in the total range. The paths are in the form of resistance paths. The signals picked up can then be associated with electrically different paths for further processing. Paths having the same resolution are also possible.

In order to provide for complete testing of all the components of a trigger circuit for actuating an automotive passenger restraint system, and thereby to prevent unintentional deployment of restraint systems, for example air bags, the test circuit performs a testing program which is initiated at the moment when electric power is applied to the passenger safety system. The testing program checks the operation of the electronic discriminator circuits as well as the correct operation of the power output circuit by generating a simulated triggering signal. The actuation of the passenger restraint system is prevented during the test cycle by blocking an auxiliary semiconductor switch connected in series with the power output transistor of the triggering circuit.

The cyclic control pulses for actuating the fuel injection valves of an internal combustion engine are extended during engine starting at low temperatures. The degree of pulse extension, i.e. of fuel enrichment, is made dependent on engine temperature and decreases as a function of cranking time. In addition, a repeated starting attempt will be accompanied by reduced pulse extension to prevent excessive enrichment of the mixture. The pulse extension may also be retained for a period of time after engine cranking to insure smooth running.

A method and an apparatus for overrunning control in an internal combustion engine are proposed, which operate with an overrunning cutoff and the reestablishment rpm of which is dependent on rpm and on time. At the onset of overrunning, a higher reestablishment rpm is selected, and once the rpm falls below a predetermined rpm value the reestablishment rpm is reduced according to a time function to a lower threshold value. The method may be realized by a controlled system, as well as by a control apparatus operating with analog circuitry.

There is described a method and an apparatus for use with the fuel preparation system of an internal combustion engine, for example, a fuel injection system which operates injection valves with electrical control pulses. When the gas pedal of a vehicle is actuated abruptly, the air flow measuring device of such systems is subject to oscillations around its equilibrium point, and the initial one of these swings is used to cause enrichment of the fuel-air mixture. The return swing generates an undesired lean signal which is suppressed by a "damping circuit". In addition, there is provided mixture enriching during steady applications of the gas pedal by means of a time-decaying enrichment signal generated by a slow acting circuit which operates in superposition to the action of the damping circuit. Both circuits may be suppressed by a blocking circuit during certain engine conditions, for example, during engine starting and engine overrunning as well as on the basis of temperature.

Electronic control circuitry is provided for controlling the actuating current of electromagnetic devices and in particular of the electromagnetic fuel injection valves of an internal combustion engine. In order to program the magnitude of the actuating current from an initial high level to a lower maintenance level, there is provided a driver circuit which receives fuel injection control pulses from a fuel injection system, not itself part of the invention, and processes these control pulses into valve-actuating current pulses. The valve current is sensed by suitable transducer, for example a resistor, and the resulting signal is fed to a two-point controller which suitably alters the input to the driver circuit to thereby change the valve actuating current. The set-point value on which the two-point controller operates is itself subject to change by means of a suitable circuit. There is further provided a free-running circuit and a quenching circuit for reducing the voltage peaks resulting from the collapse of the magnetic fields stored in the valve actuating coils. Two embodiments are presented.
