Disclosed is a process for the preparation of a thickness-reduced deep-draw-formed can, which comprises the steps of (i) coating a crystalline thermoplastic resin on a metal plate, (ii) heating the coated metal plate at a temperature higher than the glass transition point (Tg) of the thermoplastic resin and draw-forming the coated metal plated, and (iii) heating the obtained preliminarily drawn cup at a temperature higher than the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the thermoplastic resin and redrawing the cup at a bend-pulling speed of at least 1 m/min. According to this process, damage of the coating layer can be drastically moderated, and a deep-draw-formed can having prominently improved corrosion resistance and heat resistance can be obtained.

An improvement in a method for producing a welded metallic can body. The method involves holding and pressing a lap portion of the side marginal portions of a can body-like structure, which has been formed by bending a metal blank into a cylindrical shape, along its entire length between a pair of opposing parallel wire electrodes placed on the opposing surfaces of parallel electrodes, and passing an electric current across the parallel electrodes for a predetermined period of time during the pressing to subject the lap portion to resistance welding. At least one of the parallel electrodes is divided longitudinally into two or more portions electrically insulated from each other, and an electric current is passed through at least one of them independently from the other portions so that the temperature rise in the lap portion of the can body-like structure becomes uniform. Also disclosed is an apparatus for producing a welded metallic can body in accordance with the aforesaid method.

A process for producing an epoxy-type lacquer, which comprises reacting a liquid epoxy resin having about one bisphenol A skeleton on an average in the molecular chain and derived from bisphenol A and an epihalohydrin, with bisphenol A in the presence of a catalyst in an inert organic solvent to prepare a concentrated solution of an epoxy resin having a number average molecular weight of from 2,000 to 10,000, adding an organic solvent to the concentrated solution to dilute it and maintain it at a temperature lower than that at which the catalyst is active, and mixing the resulting diluted solution with a solution of a resin acting as a curing agent for the epoxy resin. The resulting lacquer is especially useful for coating metallic containers.

Disclosed is a hot-melt adhesive which comprises a copolyester of a dibasic acid component comprising 70 to 97 mole % of terephthalic acid and other dibasic acid with a polyhydric alcohol component comprising 70 to 97 mole % of 1,4-butane-diol, 3 to 30 mole % of diethylene glycol and up to 20 mole % of other polyhydric alcohol having 2 to 5 carbon atoms, said copolyester having a reduced viscosity of at least 0.6 dl/g as measured at a temperature of 30.degree. C. in a phenol/tetrachloroethane mixed solvent having a phenol/tetrachloroethane weight ratio of 60/40 at a polymer concentration of 0.25 g/100 ml, a glass transition temperature of at least 31.degree. C. and a crystallinity of 15 to 40 %.This hot-melt adhesive is excellent in the operation adaptability, and in the form of a film, the adhesive has an appropriate rigidity and a good dimension stability. Furthermore, when this hot-melt adhesive is formed into an adhesive layer between seams by hot bonding, the adhesive layer provides a high creep resistance and a good dimension stability. This hot-melt adhesive is valuably used for producing a metal vessel having a circumferential side seam by bonding cup-shaped lower and upper members along circumferential open ends of the two members.
