Also, with the electronic apparatus, when entering data identical to data already entered, the data can be entered by a simple key operation using the already entered data.

An engine rotation speed during idle running is feedback controlled to a target rotation speed. A basic ignition timing is set based on the rotation speed during idle running, and the ignition timing is feedback corrected based on a difference between a target rotation speed and a measured rotation speed. This feedback correction process and other processes including the setting of the basic ignition timing are separated. A high response ignition timing feedback control is performed by advancing the measuring timing of the rotation speed to a point earlier than the correction timing by at least the processing time required to perform the feedback correction process, and preferably by a value near the processing time. A high response fuel injection amount feedback control may also be performed by a similar process.

A system and method for detecting occurrence of engine knock in internal combustion engines are disclosed which include: at least one engine knock sensor installed in an appropriate position at each engine cylinder, a band pass filter for passing a particular component of an output signal from an engine knock sensor, a rectifier for rectifying the particular component of the output signal passed through the band pass filter and an integrator for integrating the rectified signal with a variable interval. A device is also provided whereby engine driving conditions are detected, the integration interval being varied according to engine driving conditions so that no overlap of the integration interval of one cylinder with the ignition timing of another occurs. The integrated value derived by the integrator is corrected according to the variable interval, and the occurrence of knock in synchronization with the corrected integrated value is verified.

An intake air control system for an engine having an air intake passage, a throttle valve in the intake passage and an intake valve for selectively opening and closing communication between the intake passage and a cylinder. The control system determines target intake passage pressure and target intake air amount in accordance with engine operating conditions. A target throttle opening is set in accordance with both the target pressure and the target intake air amount. The throttle valve is then driven to the target opening. Intake passage pressure is detected and a target intake valve open/close timing is determined in accordance with both the detected intake passage pressure and the target intake air amount. The intake valve is then driven in accordance with the target open/close timing.

When an air conditioner is turned on during homogeneous operation, an equivalence ratio correction factor &Dgr;&phgr; is increased sharply and suddenly in such a manner as to show a jump for thereby increasing an engine output torque, and thereafter is decreased gradually with increase of a cylinder intake air quantity, whereby to maintain the engine output torque constant. However, when switching to a homogeneous mode occurs in the middle of the above control, switching to proper torque correction is not carried out at the time of a homogeneous combustion mode, i.e., torque correction by the use of ignition timing but the torque correction by the equivalence ratio correction factor &Dgr;&phgr; continuously. By this, in contrast to the case in which the torque correction is switched to one that is carried out by the use of ignition timing correction quantity, a sharp and sudden variation of engine output torque can be prevented. In the meantime, after completion of the torque correction by the above mentioned control, the torque correction at the time of the homogeneous combustion mode is carried out by ignition timing correction. Further, when the combustion mode is switched to stratified combustion during execution of torque correction by ignition timing correction at the time of the homogeneous combustion mode, the torque correction is switched to one that is carried out by the use of the equivalence ratio correction factor simultaneously with switching of the combustion mode.

The control system decreases the air supply quantity to the engine by the air decrease quantity. Then, after the elapse of a preset time interval, the system controls the external load such as the air conditioner so as to reduce the engine load (for example, by turning off the air conditioner), and decrease the fuel injection quantity by the fuel decrease quantity. When the air conditioner is switched on, for example, the control system calculates a fuel increase quantity from the engine load increase, and further calculates an air increase quantity in accordance with the fuel increase quantity and a desired air fuel ratio after the engine load increase. Then, the control system controls the external load to increase the engine load, increases the fuel injection quantity and increases the air supply quantity.

The predetermined value is set to a value of not higher than a minimum electricity generation temperature of the fuel cell (1), and a circulation timing and flow rate of the coolant for the aftercooler (7) are controlled such that the supplied oxidizing gas does not become cold. This enables the fuel cell (1) to generate electricity at cold start-up.

The control unit determines a desired internal pressure in an intake-air passage based on a predetermined operating parameter, and detecting an operation delay-time fluctuation rate for at least the intake valve. A desired intake-air quantity is arithmetically calculated on the basis of engine operating conditions. The control unit includes a compensation section which compensates for the desired internal pressure based on at least one of the operation delay-time fluctuation rate and the desired intake-air quantity to produce a compensated internal pressure. A throttle opening is controlled depending on both the compensated internal pressure and the desired intake-air quantity. Also, the intake valve open timing and the intake valve closure timing are controlled depending on both the compensated internal pressure and the desired intake-air quantity.
