The fuel control system for an internal combustion engine comprises: cylinder-individual fuel injection quantity correcting means 45, 46 for correcting the fuel quantity injecting quantity in each cylinder so that the sum of fuel injection quantities to be supplied to the cylinders of the internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders decreases in each combustion cycle of each said cylinder and a difference between the combustion state value of the first cylinder of the internal combustion engine and that of the second cylinder thereof decreases; and fuel injecting means 20 for injecting into each cylinder the fuel injection quantity for each cylinder of said internal combustion engine corrected by said fuel injection quantity correcting means for each cylinder.

The exhaust gas recirculation as well as control thereof is realized by an electronic programmable engine control unit.

An object of the present invention is to provide an engine control device and an engine control method which can detect air quantities charged into the cylinders of the engine without delay, and the fuel injection quantity and ignition timing of the engine can be controlled with high accuracy. According to the present invention, when an engine is in steady state, charging efficiency calculating means calculates a fundamental charging efficiency for the suction air quantity of the engine from the difference between cylinder pressures which are detected in synchronization with two predetermined crank angles on the compression stroke, cylinder pressure sensors measure at least one cylinder pressure in synchronization with a crank angle on a suction stroke, averaging means averages cylinder pressures measured on the suction stroke, to provide an average value, correcting charging efficiency calculating means calculates a correcting charging efficiency from the variation in the variation of the average value averaging means in a predetermined period of time, and when the variation is equal to or larger a predetermined value, control means operates to correct the fuel injection quantity and ignition timing of the engine according to the value which is obtained by adding the correcting charging efficiency to the fundamental charging efficiency. The fuel injection quantity, the air/fuel ratio, and the ignition timing of the engine can be controlled with high accuracy.

A combustion control system includes a waveform shaping device for producing an ON signal from an ion current detected value, a down timing detecting device for detecting down timings of the ON signal, an operating device for converting the down timings into times elapsing from a reference crank angle, mask time section setting device for setting a mask time section corresponding to a combustion period in accordance with a running condition of the internal combustion engine, a selecting device for selecting at least one of said down times detected within the mask section, and a determining device for determining a combustion parameter of said internal combustion engine in accordance with the combustion ending time, whereby the combustion state of each cylinder is detected from the combustion ending time detected by the mask time section to determine the combustion parameter so as to suppress a combustion change. In this configuration, by operating a small quantity of data, an inexpensive and accurate combustion control system for an internal combustion engine can be obtained.

Electrons move between the catalyst A and the catalyst B through the electron conductive substance C, ions move through the ion conductive substance D, and an electrochemical reducing reaction and an electrochemical oxidizing reaction respectively occur on the catalyst A and on the catalyst B. Therefore, it is possible to quickly reduce the adsorbed NOx using the adsorbed hydrogen without depending on the atmosphere.
