摘要: An integral formed fluted tube intended, for example, for use as a sound suppression device in mufflers, exhaust ejectors, etc. is disclosed. The tube is formed of a cylindrical portion with generally circular inlets and outlets and a constricted portion between those ends and within the constriction, a plurality of bypasses therethrough. The constriction may also include a frontal portion having a generally concave surface which rises to an apex and thereafter forms a plurality of convex rear portions toward the outlet end. Other embodiments are shown in the Figures. The device may be used integrally within a muffler to obtain a venturi effect for an exhaust ejector and sound suppressor.

摘要: An engine exhaust filtering system (10) filters carbon particles from exhaust gases. A length of pipe (12) leads from the engine to promote the agglomeration of carbon particles in the exhaust gases. The exhaust gases then pass through a diffuser (36) having a series of chokes (38) to promote further turbulence and agglomeration of the carbon particles. A diffuser (36) directs particles for uniform distribution over a filter cartridge (22). After passing through the filter cartridge (22), the filtered exhaust gases are then expelled into the atmosphere. The filter cartridge (22) is removable and can be reused after the particles are removed.

摘要: Muffler apparatus for reducing both sound and particulates from exhaust gases from an engine. The apparatus includes resonating chambers, flow distribution structure and a cellular ceramic core filter module. Filter regeneration mechanism includes a heating element for heating the carbon on the inlet end of the ceramic core to combustion temperature. Particulate ignition resulting in regeneration occurs when combustion air is provided; in alternate embodiments, combustion air first flows through a preheater system. A processor unit with particular logic controls the apparatus.

摘要: Trap for filtering particulates from diesel engine exhaust including filter cartridge arrangement having heat enhancement elements. In the case of exhaust gases flowing through a filter cartridge from inside to out and the cartridge having an inner tubular heater, heat enhancement elements include a heat insulator plugging the downstream end of the cartridge, a plurality of flow distribution rings which inhibit flow to the end of the cartridge thereby causing more even flow through the cartridge nearer the upstream end, and mechanism for controlling regeneration on-time as a function of vehicle system voltage and pre-energization heater temperature. In the case of a filter cartridge having flow from outside to in and having an outer heater, heat enhancement elements include a tubular, non-filtering, heat insulating sleeve about the heater and mechanism for controlling on-time as a function of vehicle system voltage and pre-energization heater temperature.

An electrical power source and a combustion air source are off-board. The controlling mechanism monitors backpressure to determine when regeneration is required. The vehicle is parked at a regeneration station for connection to the air source and power source for regeneration, which is then controlled by the controlling mechanism on-board.

摘要: The present invention is directed to muffler apparatus and a method for making same. The apparatus includes inlet and outlet tubes with a plurality of baffles extending from the inlet and outlet tubes to a housing. The outlet tube has a constricted portion near its inlet end formed with creases and lobes and a flare at the end. Such constriction increases the housing to outlet tube area ratio of the muffler which results in advantageous attenuation characteristics. The process for making the muffler is simpler than known methods since the outlet tube is formed and baffles pressed onto it in a single step.

摘要: The specification discloses an improved clamp (20) for securing overlapping telescoped ends of adjacent tubes in an exhaust system, or the like, to form a substantially leakproof joint. The clamp (20) includes a circular band (26) and a bolt (32) having a curved end (34) secured thereto over a predetermined circumferential distance adjacent one end of the band, and a straight threaded end extending through an extension (40) secured adjacent to the opposite end of the band. A nut (44) is provided on the straight bolt end (38) for tightening against the extension (40) to draw the ends (28 and 30) of the band (26) together in near abutting relationship to engage the lap joint over a substantially continuous circumferential area in a second embodiment (60). The extension (62) can bridge the gap to serve as a guide for the other end of the band, or it can be an integral portion (72 and 74) of the band in a third embodiment (70).
