A three-coat one-bake type coating process includes applying an intermediate coating material, applying a finish base coating material, applying a clear topcoating material, and drying, wherein a two-package type coating material containing an isocyanate compound as the crosslinking agent is used as the intermediate coating material, whereby the surface fluidity of the intermediate coating is improved to make the coating surface smooth and the mixing of the intermediate coating with an upper layer and/or the volume shrinkage of the intermediate coating due to the component eliminated by curing are inhibited to give coated members having an excellent finished appearance.

C., and applying a clear coating (E), followed by heating to subject the films of the coatings (C), (D) and (E) simultaneously to crosslinking and curing, wherein the coloring base coating (C) and the iridescent base coating (D) are each a thermosetting aqueous coating containing, as vehicle components, an acrylic resin emulsion (a), a urethane resin emulsion (b) and a crosslinking agent (c). The process can form a multilayer film superior in iridescence feeling, depth feeling, smoothness, distinctness of image gloss, etc. and is suitably used for coating of, in particular, automobile body panel.

The aqueous primer coating composition comprises an acid-anhydride-modified chlorinated polyolefin emulsion resin (A), an aqueous urethane dispersion (B), an aqueous epoxy resin (C), and an organic strong base and/or its salt (D); wherein: relative to the total nonvolatile content of the (A), (B), and (C), the nonvolatile content of the (A) is in the range of 20 to 60 weight %, that of the (B) is in the range of 10 to 40 weight %, and that of the (C) is in the range of 20 to 60 weight %, and further, the (D) is in the range of 1 to 5 weight %. The process for formation of a coating film comprises the steps of: coating a substrate with this aqueous primer coating composition; and thereafter drying the resultant primer coating film in such a manner that its nonvolatile content will not be less than 60 weight %; and thereafter overcoating the primer coating film with a base paint and a clear paint; and thereafter baking the resultant three-layered coating film onto the substrate.
