Abstract: A differential includes a disconnect feature. When in a disengaged state, the drive gear is decoupled from the differential carrier. As a result, the portions of the powertrain that would provide propulsion through the differential may be stationary and parasitic drag is decreased. The differential is transitioned into an engaged state by providing electrical current in a solenoid coil fixed to the housing. A solenoid piston acts through a thrust bearing to slide a sleeve, thereby coupling the carrier to the drive gear.

Abstract: An electric beam axle for use in an electric or hybrid motor vehicle includes a valve positioned between a differential case and an axle tube. The valve includes a valve housing with a fluid flow path extending through the valve housing, and a valve member positioned within the fluid flow path of the valve housing. The valve can also include a stop coupled to the valve housing, the stop being configured to retain the valve member within the fluid flow path of the valve housing. The valve member is configured to prevent fluid from flowing through the fluid flow path and into the axle tube of the electric beam axle when the electric or hybrid motor vehicle is driving across steep road grades and/or under lateral acceleration (cornering) events.

Abstract: A drivetrain includes a main shaft, driven by an electric motor, and a wheel output shaft. Two gearwheels, mounted around the output shaft to rotate freely, are meshing with respective main pinions integral with the main shaft. A clutch system car engage either one of the gearwheel with the output shaft. To reduce the load applied to the gearwheels, the drivetrain includes a recirculation shaft, freely rotating relative to a housing of the drivetrain, and two recirculation pinion, integral with the recirculation shaft, each meshing with a respective gearwheel. When the clutch system engages one of the gearwheel with the output shaft, the recirculation shaft is driven by the main shaft through the other gearwheel meshing with the respective main and recirculation pinions, and the output shaft is driven both by the main and recirculation shafts, through the engaged gearwheel meshing with the respective main and recirculation pinions.

In one example, an electric drive system is provided that includes two multi-motor drive units with associated planetary gear reductions that have asymmetric gear ratios. The planetary gear reduction in each drive unit includes a ring gear and a sun gear that are rotationally coupled to a pair of motors and a carrier rotationally coupled to an output gear that interfaces with a gear reduction of an axle assembly.
