Abstract: A method for improving wear control of a steel surface lubricated with a lubricating oil through the generation of thick tribofilms. The method includes: (i) using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil, the formulated oil having a composition comprising at least one lubricating oil base stock as a major component; and at least one lubricating oil additive, as a minor component; and (ii) forming a tribofilm on the steel surface. In time-step tribofilm formation measurements of the lubricating oil by a mini-traction machine (MTM) at constant slide-to-roll ratio (SRR), the saturation traction coefficient (fs), which correlates to tribofilm thickness on the steel surface, is greater than about 0.11. In the method of this disclosure, elongation of timing chain due to wear of chain link pins is less than about 0.07%, as determined by Ford Chain Wear (FCW) test conducted in accordance with ILSAC GF-6 specification. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.

The dispersant is useful in a lubricant with a base oil for increasing soot dispersibility of the lubricant.

Abstract: An object of the present invention is to provide a lubricating oil composition capable of improving oxidation stability by allowing a base number to remain, preserving seizure resistance, preventing generation of precipitation to be caused due to addition of a base, and inhibiting a lowering of traction coefficient. The lubricating oil composition for traction drive transmission includes (A) a base oil, (B) a phosphate ester-based compound, (C) an antioxidant, and (D) an amine represented by the following general formula (I) and/or an amine oxide of the amine. In the general formula (I), each of R1 and R2 independently represents a linear, branched, or cyclic alkyl group having 1 to 26 carbon atoms, a linear, branched, or cyclic alkenyl group having 1 to 26 carbon atoms, (R4—O)m—H, or (R5—O)n1—(R6—O)n2—H, and R1 and R2 may be the same as or different from each other; each of R4 to R6 independently represents an alkylene group having 2 to 3 carbon atoms; each of m, n1, and n2 independently represents a number of 2 to 25; and R3 represents a substituted or unsubstituted, linear, branched, or cyclic alkyl group having 1 to 26 carbon atoms, or a substituted or unsubstituted, linear, branched, or cyclic alkenyl group having 1 to 26 carbon atoms.

Abstract: A lubricant composition comprises a cycloaliphatic amine alkoxylate and a base oil selected from (a) a polyalkylene glycol; (b) a polyalphaolefin; (c) a naphthenic compound; and (d) combinations thereof; provided that the cycloaliphatic amine alkoxylate and the base oil are miscible. The lubricant may exhibit a viscosity change at 40° C. of less than 5 percent (%) after 13 days at 120° C. in dry air, indicating significant thermoxidative stability with minimal or no aromatic content, thereby enabling use of Groups II and III base oils, in particular, without reduced toxicity and/or quality concerns as compared with Group I base oil lubricants.
