The presently disclosed subject matter provides a scalable and electrostretching approach for generating microfibers exhibiting uniaxial alignment from polymer solutions. Such microfibers can be generated from a variety of natural polymers or synthetic polymers. The hydrogel microfibers can be used for controlled release of bioactive agents. The internal uniaxial alignment exhibited by the presently disclosed fibers provides improved mechanical properties to microfibers, contact guidance cues and induces alignment for cells seeded on or within the microfibers.

A polyolefin composition comprising a discontinuous polymer phase dispersed in a continuous polyolefin phase is disclosed. The discontinuous polymer is polymerized by a method comprising reacting a blend or mixture of the polyolefin and one or more polyethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of a free radical initiator. Articles and materials made from he composition exhibit several advantageous properties as compared to the corresponding unmodified polyolefins, for example printability, paintability, and dyeability in the case of spun fiber, sheets, automotive applications such as interior parts and bumpers; toughness and abrasion resistance in the case of flooring, and impact strength in the case of siding.

Self-reinforced composites of amorphous thermoplastic materials such as poly(methylmethacrylate), polycarbonate and polysulfone are made by melt-extruding and simultaneously drawing and cooling the material to produce fibers with longitudinally-oriented molecular chains, then arranging the fibers in a preform, such as a mat, rod, plate or other useful shape, in which adjacent fibers are in contact with each other, and thereafter heating the preform with fiber constraint to a temperature above the glass transition temperature and below the degradation temperature of the thermoplastic, and applying pressure, to soften and fuse together the outer surfaces of the fibers without completely eliminating the longitudinal orientation of the molecules within the fibers. Where the amorphous thermoplastic is poly(methylmethacrylate), the preform may be wrapped about the bone-implantable element of a joint prosthesis to provide a high-strength integrated mantle of connected, contracted, and oriented fibers. Upon implantation of the element in the intramedullary cavity of a bone, the surface of the self-reinforced mantle of sintered fibers may then bond chemically with a grouting of conventional poly(methylmethacrylate) bone cement.

In one embodiment is provided a polymer blend of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), wherein the poly(vinylacetate) is present in an amount ranging between about 20 wt % and about 80 wt %, and poly(acrylic acid) is present in an amount ranging between about 80 wt % and about 20 wt %, based on the total weight of the blend. In another embodiment is provided a fiber produced from this polymer blend, and which has cells therein. In another embodiment is provided a flavorant release material comprising the porous fiber disclosed herein, and one or more flavorants disposed in a longitudinally extending core within the fiber. In another embodiment is provided a polymer fiber membrane containing a hollow, porous fiber formed from the polymer blend disclosed herein. In another embodiment is provided a filter containing the fiber described herein. In another embodiment is provided a process for producing the fibers disclosed herein by addition of the polymers to an extruder or blender, and extruding or melt spinning the mixture into a fiber containing cells therein.

There is disclosed a biodegradable composite fiber comprising a first component consisting of a single component fiber produced by melt-spinning a biodegradable polymer composition consisting of a starch-based polymer, a partially hydrolyzed copolymer of vinyl acetate and an unsaturated monomer containing no functional groups, an aliphatic polyester, a decomposition accelerating agent, and a plasticizer, or such a biodegradable polymer composition; and a second component consisting of an aliphatic polyester, in which the first component is present continuously in the lengthwise direction over at least a part of the surface of the fiber of the second component, and there is also disclosed a non-woven fabric, a knitted fabric, and a molded article produced from this fiber.
