Abstract: Polymeric microstructures and nanostructures can be prepared with use of a tip to pattern a surface. A tip can be used to pattern a structure which can initiate polymerization. The structure can be then exposed to monomer to induce polymerization at the structure. Alternatively, a tip can be used to pattern a surface with a monomer in which the surface is treated with polymerization catalyst so that polymerization occurs at the patterning site. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization can be carried out with use of the tip to control the polymerization. The tip can be a sharp tip as used in for example an atomic force microscope tip. Norbornene types of monomers can be used. Biological macromolecules can be also prepared.

Abstract: An amorphous diamond electrical generator having a cathode at least partially coated with amorphous diamond material and an intermediate member coupled between the cathode and an anode. The amorphous diamond material can have at least about 90% carbon atoms with at least about 20% of the carbon atoms bonded in a distorted tetrahedral coordination. The amorphous diamond coating has an energy input surface in contact with a base member of the cathode and an electron emission surface opposite the energy input surface. The electron emission surface can have an asperity height of from about 10 to about 1,000 nanometers and is capable of emitting electrons upon input of a sufficient amount of energy. The intermediate member can be coupled to the electron emission surface of the amorphous diamond coating such that the intermediate member has a thermal conductivity of less than about 100 W/mK and a resistivity of less than about 80 μΩ-cm at 20° C. The amorphous diamond electrical generator is a thermionic emission device having improved electron emission properties.

Abstract: A high-pressure gas discharge lamp (HID [high intensity discharge] lamp) is described which is free from mercury and suitable in particular for use in automotive technology. The lamp is particularly remarkable in that a rise in temperature of the coldest (lowermost) bottom regions (10) is achieved by an asymmetrical electrode arrangement, such that the light-generating substances accumulated in said regions enter the gas phase in a sufficient quantity upon switching-on of the lamp. The temperature of the hottest (uppermost) wall regions (13) is not raised thereby, indeed, it may even be reduced. An essential advantage of this lamp is that its external shape, its dimensions, and the electrodes (3) themselves need not be changed when the lamp is operated in a horizontal position with vertically aligned pinches (5), while the electrodes (3) are fastened each to a metal foil (4) in a suitable downwardly-shifted position.

Abstract: A gas discharge lamp is driven with a constant current square wave from a current transformer where the number of volt-microseconds are designed such that at the start of each square wave, the voltage rises to the required ionization potential for the lamp, while the plasma has not yet started to conduct. As soon as the lamp ionizes the gas within the lamp and current flows, the voltage drops and current flows at the desired level. The current level is set to prevent the input of excessive power pulses into the lamp, to reduce the creation of infrared photons. In addition, the plasma is driven at this current level almost continuously (with reversing polarity), which does not allow the plasma time to cool down. Consequently, the lamp becomes a more efficient light emitter, thereby requiring less energy to achieve the same light output.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for stabilizing glow plasma discharges by suppressing the transition from glow-to-arc includes a perforated dielectric plate having an upper surface and a lower surface and a plurality of holes extending therethrough. The perforated dielectric plate is positioned over the cathode. Each of the holes acts as a separate active current limiting micro-channel that prevents the overall current density from increasing above the threshold for the glow-to-arc transition. This allows for a stable glow discharge to be maintained for a wide range of operating pressures (up to atmospheric pressures) and in a wide range of electric fields include DC and RF fields of varying strength.

Abstract: A plasma lamp including a waveguide body consisting essentially of at least one dielectric material having a dielectric constant greater than approximately 2. The body is coupled to a microwave power source which causes the body to resonate in at least one resonant mode. At least one lamp chamber integrated with the body contains a bulb with a fill forming a light-emitting plasma when the chamber receives power from the resonating body. A bulb either is self-enclosed or an envelope sealed by a window or lens covering the chamber aperture. Embodiments disclosed include lamps having a drive probe and a feedback probe, and lamps having a drive probe, feedback probe and start probe, which minimize power reflected from the body back to the source when the source operates: (a) at a frequency such that the body resonates in a single mode; or (b) at one frequency such that the body resonates in a relatively higher order mode before a plasma is formed, and at another frequency such that the body resonates in a relatively lower order mode after it reaches steady state.
