Technologies to convert biomass to liquid hydrocarbon fuels are currently being developed to decrease our carbon footprint and increase use of renewable fuels. Since sugars/sugar derivatives from biomass have high oxygen content and low hydrogen content, coke becomes an issue during zeolite upgrading to liquid hydrocarbon fuels. A self-sustainable process was designed to reduce the coke by co-feeding sugars/sugar derivatives with the paraffin products from hydrogenation of sugars/sugar derivatives. Paraffins without complete conversion result in products with less aromatics and relatively low density compared with the products directly from zeolite upgrading. Thus, the process is more economically favorable.

The present disclosure provides methods to produce para -xylene, toluene, and other compounds from renewable sources ( e.g ., cellulose, hemicellulose) and ethylene in the presence of an acid, such as a Lewis acid. For example, cellulose and/or hemicellulose may be converted into 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) and 2-methylfuran, which may be converted into para -xylene and toluene, respectively. In particular, para -xylene can then be oxidized to form terephthalic acid.

The present invention provides an integrated chemical complex comprising one or more unit operations selected from the group consisting of a steam cracker comprising a C2 splitter, a linear alpha olefin plant and a solution or slurry polyethylene plant the improvement comprising integrating into the complex a reactor for the trimerization or tetramerization of ethylene in the presence of a catalyst system comprising: (iv) a source of chromium; (v) a defined P-N-P ligand; and (vi) an activator and a distillation column to separate one or more of ethylene, 1-hexene, 1-octene which olefins containing less than 1.5 weight % of internal olefins. The integration provides savings in terms of capital costs, operating costs or both.

The present invention provides a method for revamping an HF or sulphuric acid alkylation unit to an ionic liquid alkylation unit, wherein the HF or sulphuric acid alkylation unit comprises at least: - a reactor unit for contacting catalyst and hydrocarbon reactants; - a separator unit for separating a reactor effluent into a catalyst phase and an alkylate-comprising hydrocarbon phase; - a fractionator unit for fractionating the alkylate-comprising hydrocarbon phase into at least one stream comprising alkylate; and which method includes one or more of : i) providing a means for recycling at least part of the reactor effluent to the reactor unit; ii) providing a means for recycling at least part of the alkylate-comprising hydrocarbon phase to the reactor unit; and/or iii) replacing the reactor unit by a loop reactor. The invention further provides 3 further methods for revamping an HF or sulphuric acid alkylation unit.
