According to said method, the films/webs/sheets are produced by preparing a plastic melt in an extruder (14) with a slit die or from flat plastic semi-finished products (15) which have been heated to the melting temperature and which are conveyed to a calander, the shaping-engraving roller (11) of said calander being partially surrounded by a steel strip (29). An extrusion system utilizes single (30) or tandem extruders (102 and 103) and a mixer-cooler (104) to extrude a foamable extrudate through a die (37) in a sealable chamber. The foamable extrudate is shaped and calibrated within the chamber (40). The product exits the chamber to atmosphere on a continuous basis through a submerged orifice in a water baffle immersion seal. The seal includes the submerged orifice with a free wheeling guiding system upstream of the orifice. Immediately ahead of the guiding system, the parameters of the foam extrudate are sensed to control the configuration of the orifice on a continuous basis. Before the extrudate passes into the water baffle seal it moves over a floating dancer roll (65), the position of which controls a haul-off such as a vacuum belt, at the tail end of the system. This avoids pushing on the extrudate.

The invention relates to an extruder with which material is extruded through a tool (2). Fluoropolymer is used between the extrusion material and the tool (2) for reducing friction between the material and the tool. At least the surface of the tool (2) against fluoropolymer is of a material whose thermal conductivity is greater than the thermal conductivity of ordinary tool steel. Therefore the friction heat generated can be conducted efficiently away from the interface between the tool (2) and the extrusion material towards the tool (2), whereby the wear of fluoropolymer can be reduced and thus the durability of the tool (2) can be improved. In that case the extrusion product will slip evenly out from the tool (2), whereby the surface of the product is essentially smooth without transverse microscopic stripes repeated at a specific wave length.

The extrusion apparatus according to the invention comprises at least one stator (1, 6, 10), at least one rotor (2, 2a, 2b), and at least one annular feed gap (3) situated between the stator (1, 6, 10) and the rotor (2, 2a, 2b). The diameter of the feed gap (3) decreases at least partly continuously in the direction of flow of the plastic material to be extruded, and its diameter also increases continuously at least at a section of its length in the aforementioned direction of flow. With such a construction, the pressure acting on the structure of the extrusion apparatus can be considerably balanced, i.e. the apparatus can be made more durable. The invention also relates to a tubular product and a pipe made of several different materials.

There is disclosed a process for the continuous production of a thermoplastic product having oriented components. The thermoplastic compound may include filler. Preferably the filler material is characterized by high aspect ratios (length to diameter). The filler may be an inorganic filler such as mica and talc flakes, glass and carbon short fibers or organic cellulosic materials derived from wood/forest by-products and agricultural by-products. Plastics such as polyolefins, vinyls, styrenics, polyesters and polycarbonates may be used. The process may be used to manufacture both integral foam products and substantially solid products of various shapes which may have flexural/bending strength and modulus 2-10 times higher than conventionally produced products made of the same plastic/polymer material (foamed and unfoamed). The product produced by the process may have filler concentrations as high as 75 percent. The product is made by an extrusion process which orients the thermoplastic polymer and the filler, when present, in the longitudinal direction during extrusion, and which prevents relaxation of the thermoplastic polymer thereby substantially preserving the imparted orientation. With respect to the integral foamed core embodiment, the die assembly is designed to facilitate orientation of polymer molecules and filler particles, when present, in order to produce an oriented skin; to form a cavity in the thermoplastic compound; to foam thermoplastic compound into the cavity due to the action of a foaming agent; and to cool the thermoplastic compound to form an integrally foamed product.

A process for the continuous production of a high modulus article comprising a composite of an oriented plastic material and an oriented particulate material, said process including the steps of: a) continuously forcing an orientable plastics material, while it is close to or at its softening temperature and in admixture with an orientable particulate material, through a converging passage of which the cross-sectional area diminishes in the forward direction of plastic flow, thereby to produce an extrudate; b) deforming the extrudate, while it is maintained at or close to its melt temperature, to produce an oriented, deformed extrudate; and c) cooling the deformed extrudate to preserve the orientation and provide said composite. The foamed and unfoamed composite articles have strength, modulus and density values comparable to typical hardwoods or softwoods.

The extruded profile section (2) is then gripped by a withdrawal device (6).
