There is disclosed a process for reducing the amount of acetaldehyde generated when polyethylene terephthalate (PET) chip is subjected to high temperatures in order to render the PET chip suitable for making food containers, particularly beverage bottles. This process comprises the addition of primary and secondary antioxidants either prior to or after the PET polycondensation reaction in order to reduce the amount of regenerated acetaldehyde produced by the polymer. The polyethylene terephthalate produced by this process reduces regenerated acetaldehyde by at least 25% in comparison to control resin produced without antioxidants, while maintaining suitable color for use as clear glass replacement. There is also disclosed a process for molding a PET preform wherein the polymer prepared as described above is melted, formed into the desired preform shape, and solidified by cooling. This preform can then be reheated above its glass transition temperature and molded into the desired container shape.

There is disclosed a process for reducing the number of gels generated in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin. Gels are crosslinked polymers created by thermal and thermo-oxidative degradation induced during polymer production. The instant process comprises the addition of primary and secondary antioxidants prior to the PET polycondensation reaction in order to reduce the amount of thermal degradation which occurs. The polyethylene terephthalate produced by this process formed approximately 25 to 90% fewer gels while maintaining physical properties suitable for use in fiber, film, and molding applications.

A polyester container with enhanced gas barrier properties includes a polyester composition having an IV of 0.65 dL/g to 1.0 dL/g and including a polyester and a reactive organic gas barrier enhancing additive. The polyester is made using at least one first polycondensation catalyst, non-limiting examples of which include metals in Groups 3, 4, 13, and 14 of the Periodic Table and includes a catalyst residue remaining in the polyester from formation of the polyester. The catalyst residue includes at least a portion of the at least one first polycondensation catalyst.

Volatile organic compound or other materials are produced in the thermoplastic manufacture of thermoplastic polyester beverage containers. Such materials can be eluted into beverages such as carbonated beverages, sparkling or still water from the polyester. Such thermoplastic polyester resins can be manufactured with a material that can prevent the formation of, or react with, and absorb volatile by-products during the formation of thermoplastic preforms or containers from the thermoplastic pellet or chip. Further, as the preform is blown into a polyester container, the active materials of the invention prevent the generation of additional undesirable volatile materials. Lastly, the scavenger material can act as a barrier that prevents transport of materials from the exterior of the container into the container contents.

The present invention describes both a stretch-blow-molded opaque polyester container and a method of making it. The container, typically a beverage bottle has less than 15% transmission of visible light (500 nm) through a 0.4 millimeter wall thickness. It contains from about 0.1 to about 5 wt. % of said opacifying material. The opacifying material may be any material compatible with polyester resin. The method of making the container includes introducing the opacifying material during polymerization, or prepared as a master batch for mixing with the polymer. Selection of certain opacifying materials can also result in favorable reheat properties, gas permeation-barrier improvements, and when the resin contains both opacifying material and oxygen scavenger there can be a synergistic effect with respect to CO2 permeation.
