Emulsions comprising a water insoluble or semi-soluble silane or mixtures of such silanes have been found useful when used alone or formulated into aqueous primer systems to improve the adhesion of sealants, adhesives or coatings to a variety of substrates. These aqueous primers are suitable for both inorganic and organic substrates having either porous or non-porous surfaces. In many cases they have been found to outperform solvent based primers. Primers of this type can be used with a variety of waterborne or solvent based sealants, adhesives or coatings including acrylic or polyurethane latexes, high solid polyurethanes, epoxies and silicones. When used with waterborne systems, it is not necessary to wait for the primer to dry before application of the sealant, adhesive or coating.

Novel hindered alkoxy siloxane compounds and compositions containing hindered alkoxy siloxane compounds are provided. The compositions include a polymer/crosslinking system which is composed of a self crosslinking resin comprised of a silicone fluid modified with pendant or terminal silanes containing hindered alkoxy groups, or a silanol fluid and a crosslinking compound, of a mixture thereof. These components are first emulsified and then formulated into a latex sealant by blending with a separate emulsion of an appropriate catalyst. Crosslinking occurs upon drying of the emulsion.

The specification is concerned with sealant compositions comprising prepolymers which are capable of being cured by atmospheric moisture. The compositions provide a desirable blend of properties with regard to application and use, using prepolymers derived from comparatively inexpensive raw materials. The prepolymers correspond to a reaction product of an at least substantially linear acrylate ester polymer having a Tg of not greater than 10.degree. C. with a hydrolysable silane having a saturated organo-functional group, the reaction product being a fluid material soluble in organic solvents and curable by exposure to atmospheric moisture to a resilient solid. The prepolymer is a silane-modified polymer which preferably has from 2 to 3 hydrolysable silane groups per molecule of prepolymer and from 1 to 3 hydrolysable groups per silane group. Preferred acrylate ester polymers are homo- or co-polymers of butyl acrylate; copolymers may contain other acrylate monomers and or may contain up to 50 wt % vinyl monomer e.g. styrene. Preferred silanes are amino-silanes particularly those having 2 or 3 hydrolysable alkoxy groups. Also described and claimed are methods of making the prepolymers. The compositions are suited for construction and glazing sealants.

A two-component system for forming a sealing composition for bonding to unsanded, polymer-coated fiberglass surfaces. The system includes a resin component containing a major amount of epoxy resin, glycidoxy silane (0-2.5 wt. %) and hydrophilic-modified polyolefin fiber (0.5-10 wt. %), and a curing agent component having a major amount of amine curing agent and which may also contain amino silane (0-5 wt. %). The present invention relates to a binder composition containing a) 30 to 90 wt. % of an aqueous, hydroxy- and/or amino-functional resin dispersion and b) 10 to 70 wt. % of a curing agent containing alkoxysilyl groups and having a free isocyanate group content of 10 to 23 wt. % and a viscosity of 50 to 10000 mPa.multidot.s at 23.degree. C., wherein the molar ratio of the hydroxyl groups of component a) to the isocyanate groups of component b) is 0.5:1 to 2:1. The present invention also relates to the use of these binder compositions in coating and sealing compositions.
