An apparatus and method for destructively removing particles from a flowing gas containing the particles. In the specific embodiments disclosed the apparatus is adapted to remove carbon particles from diesel engine exhaust products. The exhaust products are directed to a predetermined location where they are rapidly vaporized and combine with oxygen in the exhaust products to form carbon dioxide. Vaporization in one embodiment is effected by a discharge grid 30 located within an exhaust conduit 22, the grid 30 being chosen so that alternate conductors 32 and 34 defining the grid 30 are spaced apart a distance approximately 125 times the mean diameter of the particles to be removed. A voltage differential of approximately 690 volts is applied across adjacent conductors 32 and 34. Presence of a diesel exhaust particle between these conductors 32 and 34 is sufficient to create an electric spark discharge enveloping the particle, thereby resulting in a rapid vaporization and oxidation of the particle. In a further embodiment, a filter 145 is provided in an exhaust conduit 146. A light beam from a pulse laser 148 is directed at the filter 145 via a light directing conduit 150 or an optical fiber bundle 168. The pulse laser 148 is triggered to generate a light beam when particle build up at an inner surface of the filter 145 reaches a predetermined level. The pulse laser 148 is chosen to have an output light beam having sufficient energy to vaporize carbon particles accumulated on the filter 145 surface.

The method and apparatus for controlling particulate emissions from a combustion apparatus, as a diesel engine. Diesel engine exhaust particles are electrically charged during the formation of the particles in the engine combustion chamber. A particle collector is used to collect the electrically charged particles on collecting structures connected to a high voltage power supply and ground. The collecting structures of the particle collector can be a plurality of parallel metal plates, spaced cylindrical rods, or concentrically located cylindrical members. A fibrous matrix can be located adjacent the particle collecting structure to collect the charged particles as they move through the matrix. In one embodiment, the collected particles separate from the collecting structures and return to the engine intake. In another embodiment, a removable collecting cartridge has electrically conductive plates for collecting the charged particles. The entire cartridge is removed for cleaning or replacement. The hot exhaust gas from the engine can be used to oxidize the collected particles. The collected particles that are not oxidized can be separated from the collecting structures and re-entrained into the gas. The re-entrained particles are larger than the particles formed in the combustion apparatus. The large particles can be removed by a downstream particle collection device or mixed with fuel for the engine.

Within the housing, a magnetic unit having a plurality of magnetic elements is arranged in parallel in the axial direction of the housing with a space from each other to form magnetic fields in each space. The magnetic unit is also spaced from the inner surface of the housing. The space between the magnetic elements forms a part of a gas passage connecting the inlet port to the outlet port of the housing. The fine particles coming to this space are forced away from the space due to the magnetic force therein and cleaned exhaust gas is discharged to the outside of the housing through its outlet port.

A device to trap and remove particulate matter from exhaust of internal combustion engines, without increasing resistance to the flow of engine exhaust is disclosed herein. The system is provided with a single or a plurality of ducts (1 & 2) through which exhaust gases enter tangentially into a hollow chamber (3), causing the gases to spin at high speeds. The spinning gases generate centrifugal force resulting in separation of particulate matter from the exhaust gases. The hollow chamber (3) contains ports (4) and radial projections (5) on its axial surface to allow the separated particulate matter to enter into a trap (6). The particulate matter entering the trap (6) gets stuck to a fine mesh of high temperature resistant porous material that may or may not be electrically charged. The trap (6) is enclosed in a cover (7) that encases the fine mesh which surrounds the ports (4) and radial projections (5). The cover (7) has a single or plurality of ducts (8) connecting the trap (6) to the low pressure area of the rotating gases in the hollow chamber (3) through the port (9) provided at the proximal end of the hollow chamber (3).

Particulate matter in exhaust is treated with a novel configuration. An exhaust purifying apparatus of the present invention includes a flow generating device and a treatment device. The flow generating device includes a discharge electrode arranged inside of a tubular outer shell forming a flow passage in which exhaust containing the particulate matter flows. The discharge electrode is configured to generate the flow of the particulate matter from the discharge electrode side to the outer shell side by voltage application. The treatment device includes a space defining member and a treatment electrode. The space defining member is arranged between the discharge electrode and the outer shell to define a treatment space between the outer shell and the space defining member, and is configured to allow the inflow of the particulate matter into the space. Upon treating the particulate matter, the voltage application is performed to the treatment electrode.
