A method and apparatus for rapid heating of calender rolls 350, 352 for a calendering apparatus 200 is disclosed. At a heating area 800, the rolls 350, 352 are preheated, reheated, or maintained at any temperature prior to the rolls 350, 352 being placed into the calendering apparatus 300. The preferred method of heating is by induction heating. The rolls 350, 352 may be delivered to the heating apparatus 802 from an initial storage area 420 or the calendering apparatus 300. The rolls 350, 352 are transported by an overhead transfer mechanism 400. The disclosed method and apparatus greatly facilitate formation of multi-layered laminates and is particularly useful in the tire building art.

The face seal employs a hydraulic cylinder to press a disk-shaped surface of a cap piece against the top annular face of the mold cylinder for a metallographic mounting press. The face seal cylinder is mounted to a hydraulic fluid column that allows the face seal to rotate away from the mold cylinder for access to the molding cylinder and to rotate into place when a metallographic mount is to be molded.

An organic matrix composite panel comprising laid-up prepregs is placed between sheets of a susceptor material that is susceptible to inductive heating to form a workpiece. The resulting workpiece is placed within upper and lower dies formed of a material that is not susceptible to inductive heating. An induction coil embedded within the dies is energized and inductively heats the susceptor sheets surrounding the panel. The sheets in turn conductively heat the organic matrix composite panel. A pressure zone between the workpiece and one of the dies is pressurized to form the workpiece to the contour of a forming surface on one of the dies. The pressure in the pressure zone is maintained on the workpiece until the organic matrix composite panel is fully consolidated and formed.

The RF source may include a RF terminal and a common terminal, the impedance network may include a first terminal, connected to the RF terminal, and a second terminal, and the parallel plate mold may include a first plate, connected to the second terminal of the impedance network, and a second plate, connected to the common terminal of the RF source. In an alternative embodiment the novel dielectric heater includes parallel plates divided into a number of series-connected cells. The series cells lower the capacitive component, and may be configured such that an impedance of the parallel plate mold approximates an impedance of the RF source.

The parts include a core defined with intermittent welds between two or more core sheets and aerodynamically smooth facing sheets brazed to the core. The manufacturing process includes heating the multisheet pack to its superplastic forming range below the melting point of the braze alloy, superplastically forming the pack to define braze joints having unmelted braze alloy; increasing the temperature to the braze temperature of the braze alloy, and cooling the pack below the superplastic range to freeze the braze alloy in the braze joint.

Panel construction for forming upholstery panels for use in automotive vehicles and the like, where a plastic substrate which has been formed to a desired configuration, is placed over a grounded metal horn, a layer of adhesive fabric is placed over the substrate, a layer of heat bondable foam is placed over the adhesive fabric, a cover layer is placed over the foam, heat seal punches connected to the positive output of a source of electrical energy are selectively brought in horizontally on all sides of the panel perimeter to successively compress the cover and foam against the sides of the substrate. Electrical energy is applied to the heat seal punches when in selective engaged position to melt the adhesive and the foam, and fasten the cover to the substrate. The punches are withdrawn and the completed panel is removed from the horn.

Quality thermoplastic fusion welds are formed in prefabricated resin composite parts by aligning a susceptor along a bondline between parts with the induction coil segments of a solenoid induction coil along the centerline of the coil. Energizing the coil heats the susceptor to form the weld at the bondline. For this operation, our induction heating workcell users complementary dies that define a central cavity with an oval pattern of induction cool segments surrounding all faces of the cavity where the preform composite parts and susceptor are positioned.

In some circumstances, edge seal strips are used to provide electrical continuity between the upper and lower sheets in the retort. An analogous retort can be used for metal processing operations.
