Abstract: There is described an apparatus (1) for coating a cylinder (C), in particular a wiping cylinder of an intaglio printing press, with a plastic composition comprising inter alia a blade mechanism (4) comprising a single substantially planar blade (40) with a straight edge (40a) extending along the full length of the cylinder to be coated and which is mounted rotatably about an axis parallel to the axis of rotation of the cylinder to be coated. The blade comprises, at its terminal end proximate to the cylinder, an inclined end portion (4a) having an inverted-V shape rising from the upper side of the blade, the top edge of the inclined end portion forming the straight edge of the blade. The blade is adapted to be rotated so that the straight edge of the blade undergoes an upward movement substantially tangential to the periphery of the cylinder in order to discontinue the application of the plastic composition onto the surface of the cylinder.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed by which patterns of various materials can be formed on flexible substrates by a continuous roll-to-roll manufacturing process. The patterns may include metallic, transparent conductive, or non-metallic elements with lateral dimensions including in the range from below 100 nanometers to millimeters and with thickness dimensions including the range from tens of Angstroms to greater than 10,000 Angstroms. The substrate may be any material capable of sufficient flexibility for compatibility with roll-based processing equipment, including polymeric films, metallic foils, and thin glass, with polymeric films representing a particularly broad field of application. Methods may include the continuous roll-to-roll formation of a temporary polymeric structure with selected areas open to the underlying substrate, the continuous addition or subtraction of constituent materials, and the continuous removal, where necessary, of the polymeric structure and any excess material.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for a deposition system are provided to deposit a thin coating layer on flat substrates, such as semiconductors or panels. In an embodiment, liquid supplied rollers accepting liquid media provide liquid chemicals to the substrates for coating the substrates. The liquid delivery system can control the flow and the pressure of the liquid to achieve optimum process condition with minimum excess waste. In another embodiment, rollers with non-uniform distribution of liquid media provide a non-uniform thickness profile on the substrates, which can be used to compensate for the non-uniformity of subsequent processes.

Abstract: A method of forming a nano-particle array by convective assembly and a convective assembly apparatus for the same are provided. The method of forming nano-particle array comprises: coating a plurality of nano-particles by forming a coating layer; performing a first convective assembly by moving a first substrate facing, in parallel to and spaced apart from a second substrate at a desired distance such that a colloidal solution including the coated nano-particles is between the first and second substrate; and performing a second convective assembly for evaporating a solvent by locally heating a surface of the colloidal solution drawn when the first substrate is moved in parallel relative to the second substrate. The present invention provides the method of forming the nano-particle array where nano-particles having a particle size from a few to several tens of nanometers are uniformly arrayed on a large area substrate at a low cost, and the convective assembly apparatus for the same.

Abstract: A coating composition, comprising a film-forming component, a radiation curable group, and a matting agent, wherein, when the composition is deposited and treated to form a cured coating, the cured coating is characterized as having a higher concentration of the matting agent in a top half of the coating relative to a bottom half of the coating. Methods of treating a liquid radiation curable coating composition on a substrate are also disclosed, comprising applying an IR treatment to the liquid radiation curable coating composition, and applying a radiation curable treatment to the liquid radiation curable coating composition. The coating composition can provide improved properties, such as improved gloss, haze, flexibility, and/or chip resistance, when incorporated into a coating, or allow the use of less matting agent when compared to conventional coating compositions.

Abstract: A method for the temporary protection of patinated surfaces of copper products, in which an aqueous polymer dispersion is applied to the patinated surface, so that the polymer dispersion penetrates regions of the porous patina that are close to the surface, and in which the aqueous polymer dispersion is subsequently dried, so that it forms a composite with the patina that is permeable to water vapor diffusion. The polymer dispersion binds loose dust located on prepatinated copper products and simplifies the handling of the copper products. It behaves in a hydrophobic manner, but on the other hand it permits the required access of air moisture and water to the patina layer for further weathering.
