A lightweight dust control mat having enhanced resistance to oxidation and ozonation is provided. The mat includes a rubber backing sheet with a base rubber of NBR or SBR mixed with a polar polymer additive and a chemical blowing agent. The ratio of the base rubber to the polymer additive is between about 1.2 and 9. Following vulcanization, the rubber sheet has a specific gravity of less than about 0.98 and a Bayer ozone cracking incidence factor of 4 or less.

A carpet having pile which is made up of fibers adhered to each other at points along their lengths with a chemically activated adhesive, as well as a process for treating a carpet, are disclosed. The carpet of the present invention is characterized by improved initial appearance and superior wear resistance when compared to prior art carpet constructions.

A carpet structure and backing of superior dimensional stability and integrity which is especially useful in a free float system of installation. In one aspect of the invention, a carpet is provided having a selected dimensional stability in which there is (i) a first carpet part having a primary layer with pile substantially covering a first side of the layer, the pile tufted through the primary layer to leave tuft bundles on a second side of the primary layer and a binder encapsulating the tuft bundles, the first part having a predetermined force of expansion and contraction under cycling conditions of temperature and moisture; (ii) a second part in layered relationship to the first carpet part, the second carpet part constructed from one or more layers to have a predetermined resistance to expansion and contraction at least equal to or greater than the force of expansion and contraction of the first carpet part under cycling conditions of temperature and moisture and traffic loads on the carpet pile.

An improved cushioned carpet fabric is provided. The cushioned carpet comprises a primary carpet having a primary base and a plurality of pile-forming yarns projecting outwardly from one side. A layer of reinforcement material is bonded to the primary base on the side opposite the pile forming yarns. The reinforcement layer is adjacent to and embedded in, a cushion layer of a polymer such as a polyurethane. There is preferably no additional adhesive between the cushion layer and the layer of reinforcement material since the primary carpet fabric is mated in-situ to the polyurethane-forming composition without preheating the polyurethane-forming composition. An apparatus and process for forming the cushioned carpet fabric of the present invention are also provided.

The method comprises shredding the carpet into pieces, scattering the pieces onto a support web to form a layer and heating at least the surface thereof to affect melting of the lower melting thermoplastic fibers.

An abrasion and tear resistant, high strength composite laminated padded fabric material for use in the fabrication of tradesmen and craftsmen work items such as aprons and nail bags, tool pouches and tool holders, cordless tool holsters, belts and back support pads, knee pads and the like. The composite fabric material of the invention is a heat and pressure formed double laminate of like outer primary layers of tight-woven threads of high-tenacity nylon fibers and an intermediate padding layer of cross-linked, high-density, closed-cell or open-cell, flexible synthetic polymer foam. The composite laminated fabric material is formed by first bonding one of the outer nylon fabric layers to one side of the intermediate foam layer and thereafter bonding the other outer nylon fabric layers to the other side of the intermediate foam layer.
