    Abstract: The invention relates to an optical recording medium comprising a substrate, a reflecting layer and a recording layer, wherein the recording layer comprises a compound of formula: (Formula I), (Formula II) or (Formula III); wherein R, to R, may be hydrogen or a variety of substituents, but R1 and R9 are not simultaneously hydrogen; Ym-— is an inorganic, organic or organometallic anion, or a mixture thereof; Zn+ is a proton or a metal, ammonium or phosphonium cation, or a mixture thereof; m, n and o are each independently of the others an integer from 1 to 3; and p and q are each a number from 0 to 4, the ratio of o, p and q to one another, depending on the charge of the associated sub-structures, being such that there is no excess positive or negative charge in formula (I), (II) or (III). Also claimed are the use of a xanthene perchlorate in the preparation of compounds of formula (I), (II) or (III) having organometallic anions, and the use of lactates in the application of layers of dye of compounds of formula (I), (II) or (III) to grooved substrates by spin-coating.

    Abstract: A fuel oil composition comprises a fuel oil in a major amount, which fuel oil has a mass % against n-alkane carbon number distribution curve characterised by: (i) a maximum negative gradient from carbon number 18 to carbon number 26 that is less than −0.30; and (ii) a ratio of the mass of n-alkanes of carbon number greater than 22 to the mass of n-alkanes from carbon number 18 to carbon number 21 that does not exceed 0.25; and an additive in a minor amount, which additive comprises at least one ethylene polymer which, in addition to units derived from ethylene, comprises units of the formula (I): and, optionally, units of the formula (II): wherein each R1 group and each R2 group independently represents hydrogen or methyl; each R3 group independently represents an alkyl group having 5 or more carbon atoms; and each R4 group independently represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and wherein the proportion of units of formula (I) in the or each ethylene polymer is greater than 13 and not greater than 20 mole percent, and the total proportion of units of formula (I) and of formula (II) in the or each ethylene polymer is greater than 13 and not greater than 25 mole percent.

    Abstract: The present invention is aimed at a method of providing wettability to polyester fibers or filaments, to woven or nonwoven fabrics made therefrom and to resultant articles of manufacture. The method comprises melt extruding a mixture comprising a polyester and one or more alkyl metal sulfonates where the metal is Na, Li or K and the alkyl is straight or branched chain alkyl of 12 to 15 carbon atoms, or is straight or branched chain alkenyl of 12 to 18 carbon atoms. The alkyl metal sulfonates are present from about 2% to about 5% by weight based on the weight of the polyester. A post treatment step such as an alkaline treatment step is not included. The melt extrusion mixtures do not include certain additives such as polyoxyalkylene compounds, alkylmonoethonolamide compounds, alkyldiethanolamine compounds and polyetheramide compounds.
