The present invention relates to microdevices for introducing a small volume of a fluid sample into an ionization chamber. The microdevices are constructed from a substrate having a first and second opposing surfaces, the substrate having a microchannel formed in the first surface, and a cover plate arranged over the first surface, the cover plate in combination with the microchannel defining a conduit for conveying the sample. A sample inlet port is provided in fluid communication with the microchannel, wherein the sample inlet port allows the fluid sample from an external source to be conveyed in a defined sample flow path that travels, in order, through the sample inlet port, the conduit and a sample outlet port and into the ionization chamber. Optionally, the fluid sample undergoes a chemical or biochemical reaction within an integrated portion of the microdevice before reaching the ionization chamber. A nebulizing means nebulizes the fluid sample in a nebulizing region adjacent to the sample outlet port. The invention also relates to a method for introducing a fluid sample using the microdevice.

A wide-bore capillary electrophoresis apparatus for the analysis of analyte ions is provided. The apparatus has a wide-bore capillary that has a restriction zone at one or more ends. The capillary has an inlet end and an outlet end and an opening at each of said ends. The restriction zone is capable of providing fluid communication between the wide bore and the opening at said end. The restriction zone includes a narrow bore extending to the opening and a transition zone providing gradual change of bore diameter from the wide bore to the narrow bore. The apparatus further has a buffer source to supply buffer to the inlet end of the capillary and a power supply for supplying power to drive buffer and analyte ions through the capillary. During CE, electrodes provide electrical communication between the power supply and the inlet end and the outlet end and apply a voltage differential between said ends.

The feedback loop control device comprises a transimpedance amplifier, a DC de-coupler, a frequency to voltage converter, a controller, and a voltage-controlled high-voltage power supply that provides a tip to counter-electrode voltage to the capillary tip and counter-electrode interface. The feedback loop control device measures the modulation frequency of ionization currents and provides a feedback adjustment of the tip-to-counter-electrode voltage to maintain ionization efficiency.

A fluidic device is provided that includes a plurality of fluid-transporting features extending from a common inlet to a common outlet and a means for effecting fluid flow through the fluid-transporting features. The features are associated with differing fluid dwell times. The means for effecting fluid flow cooperates with the fluid-transporting features to merge fluids from the fluid-transporting features in a manner effective to produce an output stream from the common outlet that exhibits at least one desired characteristic generated as a result of the differing dwell times. Also provided is a method for producing a fluid stream exhibiting at least one desired characteristic. Optionally, the device and/or method are used in microfluidic applications.
