A wheel speed detecting device for a vehicle having wheel speed detectors for detecting left and right wheel speeds, respectively; a turning state detector for detecting the turning state of the vehicle; and a correcting and calculating device for correcting the wheel speeds on the basis of an output from the turning state detector and for calculating a value representative of the left and right wheel speeds on the basis of the corrected wheel speeds. Thus, an error of wheel speeds detected during turning of the vehicle can be compensated for, thereby determining a correct wheel speed.
Abstract:
An apparatus for controlling a DC motor connected to an intake throttle valve in an internal combustion engine to detect an actual opening degree of the intake throttle valve and to match the actual opening degree with a command opening degree. The apparatus includes a feedback loop for defining a feedback signal indicative of a command to converge the actual opening degree of the control member to the command opening degree by reception of the command opening degree delivered by a command opening degree generating means and the actual opening degree delivered by an actual opening degree detecting means, a combined-signal generating means for combining the feedback signal defined by the feedback loop with the command opening degree delivered by the command opening degree generating means, and a motor driving means for driving the DC motor in response to an output from the combined-signal generating means. Thus, it is possible to converge the actual opening degree of the intake throttle valve to the command opening degree with a good responsiveness and a good positioning accuracy.

A semiconductor light emitting device which allows part of an active layer to generate light by supplying current to the part of the active layer is disclosed. The semiconductor light emitting device includes: a semiconductor substrate having upper and lower surfaces, the upper surface having a stepped portion, the stepped portion dividing the upper surface into at least a first area and a second area; a current confining layer, formed on the upper surface of the substrate, the current confining layer being discontinuous at the stepped portion, the current flowing through an area between the first area and the second area of the substrate; a multilayer structure formed on the current confining layer, the multilayer structure including the active layer; a first electrode which covers only part of an upper surface of the multilayer structure; and a second electrode formed over the lower surface of the substrate. In the semiconductor light emitting device, the light generated from part of the active layer is extracted to the outside through a portion of the upper surface of the multilayer structure which is not covered with the first electrode.

The optically active compound is used as a ferroelectric liquid crystal or an additive to a ferroelectric or non-ferroelectric liquid crystal.

In a system for preventing an excessive slipping of a drive wheel of a vehicle, including a drive wheel torque decrement calculating means for calculating a drive wheel torque decrement in accordance with the slipping state of the drive wheel on the basis of a drive wheel velocity and a vehicle velocity, there is further includes a switchover means which produces a torque decrement switchover signal in accordance with a further large slipping of the drive wheel appearing during a given torque reduction control, and a torque decrement changeover means which delivers, to the drive wheel torque decrement calculating means,a correcting signal indicative of a command to reduce the degree of relation of the torque decrement to the slipping state of the drive wheel in accordance with an output of the torque decrement changeover signal from the switchover means, whereby it is possible to avoid a control hunting which may be caused by a larger slipping state of the drive wheel due to a disturbance factor.

Abstract:
Erasable optical disk media basically comprise a double layer structure composed of a thermal expansion layer formed of an organic dye and a binder, and a retention layer of metal. In the recording process, the thermal expansion layer is heated to form a dome-like pit in the retention layer. The reproducing process is performed by reading differences in reflectivity from the pit and an area surrounding the pit. In the erasing process, the retention layer including the pit is heated to flatten the same under the tensile stress (residual stress) acting on the thermal expansion layer. The pit size is kept in a stable condition during the recording and reproducing processes, while the erasing can be performed completely without leaving partly erased traces. The erasable optical disk media of the foregoing construction are highly durable and resistant to heat.

A method for producing a diffraction grating in optical elements with an optical waveguide is disclosed which comprises the steps of: forming a transparent conductive film on the optical waveguide; forming an electron beam resist film on said transparent conductive film; drawing a diffraction grating pattern on said resist film with an electron beam; and developing said resist film with a diffraction grating pattern drawn thereon to form a resist film of the diffraction grating pattern.

The valve lift characteristic of inlet and/or exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine is changed when an excessive slip state of at least one driving wheel of the vehicle is detected. Restoration of the changed valve lift characteristic is inhibited when a specific running condition of the vehicle is detected, or when turning of the vehicle is detected. According to other aspects of the invention, a predetermined valve lift characteristic-changing control manner is changed in response to a detected road surface condition, or in response to detected turning of the vehicle. According to another aspect of the invention, a feedback control amount is calculated based upon a difference between a detected driving wheel speed and a detected vehicle speed, and at least one predetermined gain. The output torque of the driving wheels is reduced in response to the calculated feedback control amount. The valve lift characteristic is changed when the calculated feedback control amount indicates an excessive slip state of the driving wheel(s), and the value of the gain is changed when the valve lift characteristic is changed.
