Abstract:
In an apparatus and method for prefabricating pockets continuously, pocket material is directed lengthwise along a predetermined path. The pocket material is nipped between a feed roller and an idler roller for advancement first to an adhesive application station. In one embodiment, predetermined adhesive strips formed from ribbons comprising a layer of fusible adhesive on a backing are attached along the edges of the pocket material. If desired, a transverse strip of adhesive can also be applied. In the alternative, adhesive can be extruded directly onto the pocket material along the edges and transversely if desired. The pocket material is then advanced past a cutter and sheared to provide an individual pocket blank. The pocket blank is next aligned, after which the aligned pocket blank is transferred into position for transverse folding. In the preferred embodiment, the edges of the pocket blank having adhesive there along are folded inwardly simultaneously upon transfer. A movable blade then folds the pocket blank transversely and advances the folded pocket blank into one of a plurality of pocket receivers in a rotatable pocket wheel. As the wheel is indexed, the edges of the folded pocket blank are engaged and activated to permanently secure the edges and thereby form a pocket. The prefabricated pockets are then removed for subsequent implantation into a garment.
Abstract:
Separator materials suitable for use in electrolytic cells, for example, for the electrolysis of alkali metal chloride brines, are sealed by a method which comprises coating the sections to be sealed with a synthetic thermoplastic sealing agent and ultrasonically sealing the coated portions. The method permits the sealing-in-place of separator materials and allows them to be unsealed and resealed without damage to the separators.
Abstract:
Methods of making feminine hygienic pads from non-layered and layered material by use of folding, pressure molding and various methods of bonding to create a long geometric form with an anterior leading panel of narrow thickness and a thicker posterior underpanel of a wider thickness. The folded panels may be bonded by either a suitable adhesive, crimping, heat, pressure or ultrasonic means leaving an anterior portion with a leading anterior edge and a larger posterior portion. A filler may be inserted between the folds of the material prior to bonding. Thereafter, the long geometric form is multiple cut transversely providing pads about two inches long. These pads are used for insertion into the female interlabial space. The geometric configuration of the pads facilitates insertion of the pad via the anterior leading edge into the interlabial space and has improved retention within such space.

Apparatus for forming annular articles from elongated workpieces of thermoplastic material is provided with clamps for grasping the ends of the workpiece, and a heating plate with two opposed surfaces; the clamps apply the ends of the workpiece to the plate to heat them and then bring the ends together.
Abstract:
An improved water mattress can be fabricated by a method which involves folding a rectangular sheet of thermal plastic material into a smaller rectangular sheet to form a dual-layered sandwich having three open edges; thereafter lap-sealing these three open raw edges to form a flat closed envelope, open at its corners; subsequently cutting specific sized rectangular notches in each corner of the envelope whereby the several apexes of each notch can be separated to form an overlapping slit which is reinforced with a separate piece of vinyl that is integrally bonded with the laps of the slit while it is in its stretched condition to completely seal the mattress. More specifically, sealing the open corners, after they are notched, is accomplished by stretching them over a small elongated oval die sufficient to cause the edges of the resulting slit to overlap slightly whereby an elongated reinforcing piece of vinyl can be lapped therewith and can be thermally welded with these overlapping edges to form a reinforced corner seam when all laps are welded simultaneously. After the last corner is properly sealed, the small, oval-shaped or elongated die can be removed through a plastic valve incorporated in one of the surfaces which is used to fill the resulting parallelepiped envelope forming the mattress.
Abstract:
Superimposed heat-sealable layers are heat-sealed by applying external suction to draw the layers apart, inserting a nozzle between the parted layers, directing hot gas from the nozzle onto the inside surfaces of the layers, removing the nozzle and pressing the heated surfaces together. Preferably the layers are carried by a conveyor, such as between a pair of endless chains, along a path on which the suction means, nozzle means and pressing means are successively arranged.
Abstract:
A method apparatus for installation for the continuous manufacture of articles of clothing constituted by a flexible non-elastic element on which is fixed locally at least one stretched elastic element adapted to confer on the said nonelastic element the faculty of stretching, the elastic element being fixed in position in the stretched condition. The said method comprising essentially the steps of: causing a continuous strip of said non-elastic element to travel, without being subjected to deformation, at a constant speed and always in the same direction; simultaneously causing at least one continuous tape or band of said elastic element to move in the same direction and at the same speed as the said strip, while subjecting said elastic tape to a pre-determined stretch; fixing the said elastic tape in the stretched condition on the said nonelastic strip; and cutting the assembly formed by the non-elastic strip and the elastic tape fixed on said strip, transversely to the direction of travel so as to obtain a continuous series of articles separated from each other; the said non-elastic strip being further subjected at regular intervals to a second cutting operation following a predetermined outline so as to form rough shapes of the articles to be obtained.

ORIENTED, HEAT SET POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE FILM EDGES CAN BE JOINED IN A STRONG, FLEXIBLE SEAL BY PASSING SUPERPOSED CONGRUENT EDGES OVER A GAS FLAME UNDER CONDITIONS WHICH FUSE THE EDGES INTO A BEAD HAVING AN ELLIPTICAL CROSS SECTION OF SPECIFIC DIMENSIONS AND CONFIGURATION.
Abstract:
A single strip of flexible and impervious material is folded lengthwise upon itself to form a double-thickness member, which is provided midway between its ends with a recess extending inwardly from one edge. The edges of the strip and substantially all of the area between the recess and the other edge of said member are sealed together so that two longitudinally spaced breathing bags are formed that are integrally connected at their inner ends by a band adapted to extend around the back of the neck to suspend the bags over the chest. Each bag has an opening therein near its outer or lower end.
Abstract:
AN IMPROVED GARMENT STRAP MATERIAL AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME, THE STRAP COMPRISING A DOUBLE THICKNESS OF MATERIAL. A WEB OF MATERIAL OF ESSENTIALLY TWICE THE WIDTH OF STRAP DESIRED IS FORMED OR FOLDED ALONG TWO FOLD LINES TO DISPOSE THE MARGINAL EDGES OF THE WEB IN ADJACENT OR ABUTTING RELATION ON ONE WURFACE OF THE STRAP MATERIAL. THE EDGES ARE THEREAFTER COVERED BY FLOCKING BONDED TO THE SURFACE, THE ADHESIVE, IN ADDITON TO ITS FLOCK SUPPORTING FUCTION, LAMINATING THE DOUBLE LAYERS OF MATERIAL.
