Abstract:
The invention relates to a mixture in powder form and comprising (i) at least one polyamide and (ii) at least one polymer (A) containing hydroxyl functional groups and compatible with the polyamide. The polymer (A) may be an ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer. The mixture may be used to coat metal substrates.
Abstract:
A color-plus-clear coating system is disclosed. A pigmented or colored basecoat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent topcoat to the basecoat. The transparent topcoat composition is a crosslinkable composition comprising (1) a material containing a plurality of carbamate and/or urea functional groups and (2) an aminoplast crosslinking agent. The topcoat composition provides a composite coating with improved acid etch resistance, making the composite coating particularly useful as an automotive topcoat.
Abstract:
A water-based coating composition and methods of making and using the same are disclosed. The composition includes a halogenated resin, a polyol, a surfactant, and an amine. It is suitable for coating a variety of substrates including polyolefinic substrates such as polypropylene, and operates without aromatic organic solvents.

Abstract:
The present invention provides for amino-crosslinkable coating formulations based on a mixture of a di- or polyhydroxy functional polymeric component selected from the group consisting of diesters, polyesters, alkyd polymers, acrylic polymers and polycarbonate polymers, a crosslinking agent such as a methylol (alkoxymethyl) amino crosslinking agent, and a reactive additive which is the ester reaction product of a phenol carboxylic acid, preferably para-hydroxybenzoic acid, and an epoxy compound selected from glycidyl ethers, glycidyl esters, linear epoxies and aromatic epoxies. The crosslinkable compositions of this invention may be used to prepare curable coating and paint formulations, and also may contain other ingredients such as a crosslinking catalyst, fillers, pigments and the like. When cured, the coatings of this invention exhibit improved physical and chemical properties when compared with cured coatings which do not contain the ester reaction product additive.
Abstract:
Sulfonimide cure catalysts are used with aminoplast crosslinking agents and resins capable of reacting with aminoplast crosslinking agents to prepare heat curable compositions capable of crosslinking to form coatings and articles. Liquid or solid curable compositions may be prepared. Solid sulfonimide catalysts used in combination with solid glycoluril type crosslinking agents are well suited for powder coating systems containing hydroxy- and carboxy-functional resins.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a coating composition for PVC sections, based on a polymeric vehicle, a crosslinking agent, and a thermoplastic resin powder. The coating composition is particularly useful for coating PVC sections for windows, shutters, and doors. PVC joinery coated with the composition of the invention has exceptional impact strength and resistance to abrasion, friction, and inclement weather.

Abstract:
The invention relates to aqueous dispersions of cross-linked polymer microparticles, prepared in an aqueous medium from a polymer, optionally dissolved in an organic solvent, said polymer bearing at least two hydroxyl groups and comprising a number of ionic groups sufficient for the formation of a stable aqueous dispersion, as the component (A) and one further component (B) at an elevated temperature, characterized in that component (A) is a polyesterpolyol, a polyurethane or a polyacrylate having an acid value of from 5 to 168, and that component (B) is an aminoplast resin consisting of molecules containing at least two reactive groups consisting of hydroxyl and/or amino and/or ether groups, that the ratio by weight of component (A) to component (B) is between 30:70 and 95:5, and that the dispersion is stable and usable in water and/or an organic solvent or mixtures thereof. The invention further relates to a process for producing these dispersions, the use thereof and coating compositions containing said dispersions.
Abstract:
The invention provides a method of forming a coating film by forming in sequence a pigmented base coat and a clear top coat on a substrate followed by finishing by the two-coat one-bake technique, the method being characterized by using, as a coating composition for pigmented base coat formation, a composition comprising, as essential components thereof,(1) an OH-containing resin,(2) an amino resin,(3) a polyorganosiloxane which has, on an average, at least two groups, per molecule, each selected from the class consisting of a silanol group and an alkoxysilane group and has a number average molecular weight of at least 1,000,(4) a metal chelate compound(5) a flaky metal powder and/or a mica powder, and(6) an organic solvent, and using, as a coating composition for clear top coat formation, a composition comprising, as essential components thereof,(1) an OH- and epoxy-containing base resin which further contains at least one group selected from the group consisting of a silanol group and a hydrolyzable group bound directly to a silicon atom,(2) a curing catalyst, and(3) an organic solvent.
