    Abstract: A diaphragm pump intended particularly for use as a fuel pump for internal combustion engines has inner and outer housings separated by a diaphragm. The space contained between the diaphragm and the outer housing forms the working space of the pump through which the fluid is sucked in and discharged. This space is divided by a single unitary separating wall into three separate chambers. This is effected by clamping the edge of the separating wall between the diaphragm and the rim of the outer housing and forming the separating wall so that it also forms a second seal against the outer housing. This second seal extends round a closed path and the space between the outer housing and the separating wall within this seal forms a suction chamber and the space outside this seal is divided by a further part of the separating wall into a working chamber partly defined by the diaphragm and a pressure chamber. The separating wall is provided with a suction nonreturn valve between the suction chamber and the working chamber and an outlet nonreturn valve between the pressure chamber and the working chamber.

    Abstract: In an internal combustion engine, exhaust gas is recirculated from the intake manifold exhaust gas crossover passage to the induction passage. An exhaust gas recirculation control valve is positioned by the throttle to proportion exhaust gas recirculation flow to induction airflow. In one embodiment, the exhaust gas recirculation passages are cast integrally in the intake manifold. Fuel metering in a timed fuel injection system responsive to manifold absolute pressure is compensated for exhaust gas recirculation.

    Abstract: An improved induction system for internal combustion engines comprising a relatively large capacity throttle controlled ambient air induction circuit and a relatively small capacity unthrottled air induction circuit for high-temperature air, the air induction balance between the circuits being variable to automatically and continuously regulate engine inlet air temperature between a maximum at idle and a minimum at full load, and means for admitting fuel to the inlet in such quantities that the fuel-air ratio approaches the lean limit of combustibility corresponding to the inlet air temperature provided at each throttle setting across a wide range of engine operating conditions. Both carburetion and fuel injection systems are disclosed.
