A metro switch and method for transporting data configured according to multiple different formats. In one aspect, a network system and method that provides for point-to-point communication of data of various different formats such as ATM, frame relay, PPP, Ethernet, etc. Accordingly, the invention may interface disparate network devices, such as private networks and other entities that operate according to various different protocols and that use various different media. At ingress points to the system, the data is received from data sources and configured according to a universal format. This allows data from origins that use different data formats and/or transmission media to be mixed and transported onto the same media. The data is then transported to one or more destinations using this format. At egress points of the system, the data is reconverted to its original format for use at its destination. Thus, transportation of various different communication services and distribution to respective destinations is provided through a high-speed interconnect. Because the data is converted to a universal format and reconverted to its original format as needed, various different data formats may be accommodated and may share the same communication media.

A programmable fast packet switch testbed (10) for use in the evaluation of prototype architectures and traffic management algorithms is disclosed. The programmable switch (10) is arranged as an add-on peripheral to a conventional computer system including a host central processing unit (CPU) (2). The switch (10) includes a plurality of port processors (14) in communication with port interfaces (12); each of the port interfaces (12) is a conventional interface for high data rate communication, while the port processors (14) are programmable logic devices. The switch fabric is realized in a multiple slice fashion, by multiple programmable logic devices (18). A central arbiter (30), also realized in programmable logic, controls routing of cells within the switch (10). Programming of the port processors (14), fabric slices (18), and arbiter (30) is effected by downloading, into these devices, bit-streams supplied by the host CPU (2) that define the switch architecture, including selection of input or output queuing and the fabric type, along with the implementation of traffic management algorithms in the port processors (14), fabric slices (18), and arbiter (30). Each of the port processors (14), fabric slices (18), and arbiter (30) also contain memory locations for storing results of operation, which are read by the management port (24) over a management bus (COMET), and may then be forwarded to the host CPU (2), without interfering with switch traffic. The programmable switch (10) is therefore capable of full speed operation as a fast packet switch, thus providing accurate evaluation results.

Each module (12-x) of the input stage (12) is connected to each module (13-x) of the central stage (13) and each module (13-x) of the central stage (13) is connected to each module (14-x) of the output stage (14). A standard interface (15) for all protocol types is in each case provided between the input stage (12) and the central stage (13) and between the central stage (13) and the output stage (14). Each of the modules (13-x) of the central stage (13) is designed for one protocol type. The interfaces (15) comprise means for forwarding information as a function of the protocol type to a module (13-x) of the central stage (13) adapted thereto.

An Asynchronous Transfer Mode switch and method which facilitate point-to-multipoint transmission are disclosed. Each input port within the switch includes a switch allocation table ("SAT") which manages bandwidth allocation and delay. Each SAT includes a plurality of sequentially ordered cell time slots, a subqueue and a synchronized pointer which is directed to one of the slots such that at any given point in time each of the pointers is directed to the same slot location in the respective SAT with which the pointer is associated. To execute point-to-multipoint operation where output port conflicts are present the switch transmits copies of the cell to the output ports at different points in time. More particularly, the switch transmits copies of the cell to available output ports, and tracks such transmission for managing future transmission to unserviced output ports. To track transmission the switch includes a map and scoreboard. The subqueues are used to index into a table and may be associated with one or more output ports. The map indicates which subqueues, and hence which output ports, are initially eligible to receive a copy of the cell. The scoreboard indicates which subqueues, and hence which output ports, have received a copy of the cell. Tracking is realized by updating the scoreboard when copies of cells are transmitted. Copies of the cell are not sent to already serviced output ports. When each designated subqueue has been service, and hence each associated output port has been serviced, the cell is dequeued.

A switching system comprising a switching structure for routing cells from a set of M input ports towards a set of M output ports. The system includes a set of distributed individual Switch Core Access layer elements which communicate with one input and output port of the switching structure by means of a set of serial communication links. Each SCAL element provides attachment to at least one Protocol Adapter and comprises a set of circuits. The receive part of each circuit includes means for introducing at least one extra byte to every cell. The extra byte is reserved for carrying a routing header for controlling the switching structure in a first step, and then for use by the PINT circuit when the cell will be received by the transmit part in a second step. The transmit part of each PINT circuit comprises a control module that receives all the cells generated at the corresponding output port and controls whether to discard the cell based on the value of the extra byte.

The rearrangement in position of information of payload field is performed by a position switch which performs rearrangement within an ATM cell and between ATM cells. The position switch selects divided part informations in the payload fields with a signaling signal. The division of the payload field into units of 8.times.N bits may be a division other than a division beginning with the first bit of an ATM cell immediately following a header.

The connection topology memory is distributed among the at least one input side translator and the at least one output side translator. With this arrangement, memory bandwidth requirements associated with connection topology look-up operations are distributed and scaling the number of ports is facilitated.
