The magnetoresistance effect element is of a multilayered structure having at least magnetic layers and an intermediate layer of an insulating material, a semiconductor or an antiferromagnetic material against the magnetic layers, and the magneto-resistance effect element has terminals formed at least on the opposite magnetic layers, respectively, so that a current flows in the intermediate layer. The film surfaces of all the magnetic layers constituting the magnetoresistance effect element are opposed substantially at right angles to the recording surface of a magnetic recording medium. Therefore, the area of the magnetic layers facing the recording surface of the magnetic recording medium can be extremely reduced, and thus the magnetic field from a very narrow region of the high-density recorded magnetic recording medium can be detected by the current which has a tunneling characteristic and passes through the intermediate layer.

A transfer device is provided for distributing the output of a transmission to front wheels and rear wheels of the vehicle through a front power train and a rear power train. The output shaft of the transmission is operatively connected to the rear power train. The transfer device has a drive gear rotatably mounted on an output shaft of the transmission and engaged with a driven gear in the front power train, a fluid operated multiple-disk friction clutch having a drive drum and a driven drum. The driven drum is secured to the drive gear and the drive drum is secured to the output shaft. The output shaft of the transmission and the drive gear are arranged to be changed with an output shaft and a drive gear for the front power train which are engaged with each other, and an input member of the rear power train is arranged to be secured to the drive drum. Thus, the power transmitting system can be changed from the front-wheel drive based four-wheel drive system to the rear-wheel drive based four-wheel drive system.

The wiper receiving cavity has an opening through which a wiper goes in and out and which is open and closed by means of a lid member. The usual operation of the wiper system is performed in response to turning ON of a manually operable wiper switch. The wiper system has also another manual switch, operable independently of operation of the wiper switch, for allowing the lid member to be open in response to turning ON thereof. In addition, the wiper system includes means for changing a lower angular position thereof to a higher position.
