Abstract:
A micromechanically fabricated read/write head for charge storage devices comprising a supporting base, a cantilever and a tip with a shaft and frontside end. The supporting base, cantilever and tip form one integral part made of electrically conducting material. The frontside end of the tip is so designed as to allow writing and reading of information in direct contact with the surface of a charge storage device. The shaft of the tip has a small diameter and is surrounded by a strengthening shell.
Abstract:
Adjacent shaped grooves are placed in single crystal structure with great accuracy and known dimensions by a combination of anisotropic and isotropic etching to produce a scanning probe microscope calibration standard with fine V-shaped grooves forming a prismatically shaped ridge or blade between them. A probe microscope to be calibrated is used to profile the tip of the ridge in a number of places along the length of the ridge. With knowledge of the sidewall angles and tip radius of the calibration standard both the flat tip dimensions of a probe with a flared tip and the tip radius of a probe with a conical tip can be calculated from the profile they produce.
Abstract:
Microwave heating of intact Trigonopsis variabilis cells to 60.degree.-68.degree. C. for 20-40 seconds selectively deactivates esterases and catalases while retaining the activity of D-amino acid oxidase. The heating is effected with a microwave frequency of 0.4-24 GHz.
Abstract:
A micromechanical sensor is described for the AFM/STM profilometry, incorporating a cantilever beam with at least one tip at its end and a mounting block at the opposite end. A method is described incorporating the steps of coating a wafer substrate with an insulating layer, forming a mask in the insulating layer, etching a trench in the wafer substrate, removing the insulating layer, coating the desired cantilever beam and tip material, respectively, etching the cantilever beam and tip material, and removing at least a portion of the supporting wafer material from the bottom side. The invention overcomes the problem of forming a micromechanical sensor having a cantilever beam, a tip with a predetermined shape and a mounting block.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for the selective deposition of metal layers on a substrate. At least one metal layer is deposited in a self-aligned manner on conductive regions on the surface of isolating or semiconductive substrates, for which purpose the conductive regions are arranged facing a metal plate having at least one layer of the metal to be deposited, and Tesla currents are generated between the metal plate and the regions to be coated. The apparatus for implementing the method includes a metal plate, a Tesla transformer which is coupled to the metal plate or to a metal grid, spaced apart from the surface of the metal plate away from the conductive regions, having closely adjacent and regularly distributed spikes pointing towards the metal. This method may be used, for example, to produce conductors on or in ceramic modules, circuit cards and semiconductor elements.
Abstract:
The present invention describes a novel transgenic mouse model for the common sporadic form of Alzheimer's disease. More particularly, the invention relates to a nucleotide sequence encoding Aβ 4-42 in functional linkage with at least a promoter, signal peptide sequence and a polyadenylation signal sequence, a cell and a transgenic non-human animal comprising said nucleotide sequence, and their respective use in screening methods.
Abstract:
In a method for sorting mail items which are unaddressed and held in a number of batches each batch is obtained and registered by recording at least one graphical feature of a mail item which uniquely describes the batch (i.e. clearly identifies the batch from other batches). The graphical reference feature is linked to a batch of unaddressed mail and an associated sorting plan. In a subsequent sorting of all batches, each batch is recorded once again and its reference feature is detected and it is distributed according to the sorting plan, if necessary to an end delivery point.
Abstract:
In a drive unit having at least one transmission stage (Ü) and one drive element (4) for driving with high power density, having a drive element (4), and element (8), and an output element (14), wherein a translation and transmission of a drive torque occurs between the drive element (4) and the output element (14) via a plurality of radially movable toothed segments (10), the drive element (4) is to be embodied as an electrical drive for the transmission stage (Ü).
Abstract:
A coaxial transmission, especially a hollow shaft transmission for industrial drive engineering, having a high power density. The transmission comprises an input element (7), an element (3) and an output element, a drive torque being multiplied and transmitted between the input element (7) and the output element via a plurality of radially mobile toothed sections (5). At least one toothed section (5) has a bearing element (11) which is enlarged in its effective zone with respect to an input element (7).
