Embodiments herein are related to hydrophilic open cell foams with particulate fillers. In an embodiment, an article is provided that has an open cell foam structure including a hydrophilic polymer and about 0.1 wt. % to about 40.0 wt. % of a particulate filler dispersed within the hydrophilic polymer. The open cell foam structure can exhibit a rate of absorption of water greater than an otherwise identical foam lacking the particulate filler. Other embodiments are included herein.

[Problem] To provide a composition for film formation comprising cellulose fibers, a layered inorganic compound, and a water-soluble polymer, which are each dispersed on nano level, a method for preparing a cellulose dispersion capable of forming a moisture-resistant film containing cellulose nanofibers, a gas-barrier laminate obtained by use of the dispersion, and a packaging material using the laminate. [Solution] A film-forming composition comprising at least cellulose fibers and a swollen inorganic compound is prepared. The method of preparing a cellulose dispersion comprises the steps of oxidizing cellulose, fibrillating the thus oxidized cellulose to prepare cellulose nanofibers, and adding a water-soluble polymer and inorganic particles to the dispersion containing the cellulose nanofibers.

A method for forming a thermoplastic composition that contains a combination of a renewable biopolymer with a polyolefin is provided. The biopolymer and polyolefin are supplied to the extruder at a feed section. The plasticizer is directly injected into the extruder in the form of a liquid so that it forms a thermoplastic biopolymer in situ within the extruder and then a homogeneous blend. The in situ addition of the plasticizer is facilitated by the use of a compatibilizer that has a polar component with an affinity for the biopolymer and a non-polar component with an affinity for the polyolefin.

Biodegradable polymer blends suitable for laminate coatings, wraps and other packaging materials are manufactured from at least one “hard” biopolymer and at least one “soft” biopolymer. “Hard” biopolymers tend to be more brittle and rigid and typically have a glass transition temperature greater than about 10° C. “Soft” biopolymers tend to be more flexible and pliable and typically have a glass transition temperature less than about 0° C. While hard and soft polymers each possess certain intrinsic benefits, certain blends of hard and soft polymers have been discovered which possess synergistic properties superior to those of either hard or soft polymers by themselves. Biodegradable polymers include polyesters, polyesteramides, polyesterurethanes, thermoplastic starch, and other natural polymers. The polymer blends may optionally include an inorganic filler. Films and sheets made from the polymer blends may be textured so as to increase the bulk hand feel. Wraps will typically be manufactured to have good “dead-fold” properties so as to remain in a wrapped position and not spring back to an “unwrapped” form.

Nanocomposite films comprising carbon nanotubes dispersed throughout a polymer matrix and further comprising at least two surfaces with differing amounts of carbon nanotubes and differing electrical resistivity values are provided. Nanocomposite films comprising a polymer layer, a conductive nanofiller layer, and a polysaccharide layer having antistatic properties are provided. In particular, nanocomposites comprising polyvinyl alcohol as the polymer, graphene as the conductive nanofiller and starch as the polysaccharide are provided. In addition, processes for forming the nanocomposites, methods for characterizing the nanocomposites as well as applications in or on electrical and/or electronic devices are provided.
