The present invention relates to a metal cable usable for reinforcing a carcass reinforcement for a tire, such as a heavy-vehicle tire, to a composite fabric usable as a ply for such a carcass reinforcement, to a carcass reinforcement comprising this fabric and to a tire incorporating this carcass reinforcement.A metal cable according to the invention comprises a textile wrap, and is such that said wrap is formed of an aromatic thermotropic polyester or polyester amide.A composite fabric according to the invention is such that it comprises a rubber composition which is reinforced by said cables.A tire according to the invention has its carcass reinforcement comprising said composite fabric.

The object of this invention is to provide a steel cord, which has ultrafine steel filaments with a diameter of 0.04-0.14 mm stranded with each other so as to reinforce a tire carcass, and a radial tire for a passenger car using the same. The steel cord includes one core filament with a diameter of 0.04-0.14 mm and 4-7 sheath filaments, each having a diameter of 0.04-0.14 mm, spirally stranded around the core filament. At this time, the steel cord has a diameter of 0.2-0.5 mm and shear strength of 25-35 kgf. Additionally, each of the sheath filaments has a smaller diameter than the core filament, and the core filament and the sheath filaments are made of the steel filaments. The radial tire includes the tire carcass provided with the steel cord and a topping sheet, and the steel cord is embedded in the topping sheet such that a rubber gauge ratio is 200-500 % and a rubber clearance ratio is 60-250 %. The steel cord has improved physical properties, such as shear strength and durability, to reduce a thickness of a carcass including the steel cord, leading to the reduction of a weight of the radial tire. Furthermore, controlling stability and durability of the radial tire are improved, thereby reducing costs of maintenance of the passenger car.

The present invention provides structure of steel cord in heavy duty tires, in which the adhesive strength between filament and rubber, and penetrating property of rubber are improved by making the twist direction of core and strand different in the steel cord comprising core and strand filament, and by making the pitch or the twist period of core and strand different. In particular, this structure is applied to steel cord of 3+8*d(HT) which is used in heavy duty tires. In this application, twist direction of core filament is in the S direction and twist direction of strand filament is in the Z direction, and the ratio of the pitch of core filament (CP) and the pitch of strand filament (SP) is between 0.50 and 0.94.

A reinforcing structure designed for handling compression stress states when the structure is molded into a composite. The structure, specifically a wrapped cord with metallic filaments contained therein, is suitable for both compression and tension load forces. The reinforcing structure has a core comprising a plurality of essentially straight, nested filaments arranged in parallel, the filaments forming a line of contact with adjacent filaments that extends along the length of the filaments. Wrapped about the core is at least one helically wound wire.

Process for producing a steel cord for pneumatic tires comprising a bunch of wires, the core of which consists of wire filaments 10 arranged bunched juxtaposed in parallel. Preferably at least three wire filaments 10, 20 are provided, at least two wire filaments located juxtaposed in parallel being spirally shaped as core filaments 10 forming a core 60 and at least one wire filament spirally surrounding the two core filaments 10 as a sheathing wire 20. Spirally shaping the wire filaments 10 is achieved in accordance with the invention by false twisters 40. Due to this spiral shaping of the wire filaments 10 migration of the filaments from the core composite is avoided more particularly. The residual torsional stresses of the core filaments among each other and in conjunction with the restoring forces of the sheathing wire are advantageously cancelled. In addition, the steel cord features to advantage a flattened, more particularly, oval shape.

The steel cord has a plastic and elastic elongation at break of x % and a plastic and elastic elongation capability in the vulcanized elastomer of y %, the values x and y fulfilling following equation: y-0.50.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.y+0.50, which means that the total elongation at break does not fall down considerably after embedding the steel cord into an elastomer.
